Boxing At The 1960 Summer Olympics – Bantamweight
The men's bantamweight event was part of the Boxing at the 1960 Summer Olympics, boxing programme at the 1960 Summer Olympics. The weight class allowed boxers of up to 54 kilograms to compete. The competition was held from 25 August to 5 September 1960. 32 boxers from 32 nations competed. Competition format The competition was a straight single-elimination tournament, with no bronze medal match (two bronze medals were awarded, one to each semifinal loser). There were 33 boxers entered, but the boxer from the Republic of China (Formosa) at the 1960 Summer Olympics, Republic of China withdrew at the last minute, too late to change the bracket; therefore, one bout was conducted in the round of 64 and one boxer received a bye in the round of 32. PalaLottomatica
Palazzo dello Sport or PalaEUR, formerly known as PalaLottomatica, is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment arena in Rome, Italy. It is located in the heart of the well known modern EUR complex. Peter Weiss (boxer)
Peter Weiss (16 December 1938 – 27 March 2021) was a German born-Austrian amateur boxer. He competed at the 1960 Summer Olympics as a Bantamweight and the 1964 Summer Olympics as a Featherweight. Early life Weiss was born on 16 December 1938, in Berlin, Germany. His father was Ernst Weiss (1912–1997), a professional boxer. Career Weiss followed in his father's footsteps and started boxing in 1958. He represented Austria at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and won his first round bout by outpointing the Indonesian Tiang Hok Oei. Weiss lost the second-bout to Alfonso Carbajo and thus, got eliminated. Tahar Ben Hassen (born July 14, 1941), sometimes written as Tamar Ben Hassan, is a retired Tunisian boxer. Olympics Hassen competed in the 1960 Summer Olympics as a bantamweight. Jerry Armstrong
Jerry Lee Armstrong (June 26, 1936 – May 7, 2023) was an American amateur boxer. He competed in the bantamweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics and finished in fifth place. Armstrong served with the U.S. Army and then graduated from Idaho State College. He later worked for 29 years at the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, retiring in 1998 as personnel director. In the meantime he also refereed about 100 professional boxing matches. In 1980 he was inducted to the Idaho State University Hall of Fame.
