The men's light welterweight event was part of the boxing programme at the 1956 Summer Olympics. The weight class was allowed boxers of up to 63.5 kilograms to compete. Festival Hall is a heritage listed entertainment venue located at 300 Dudley Street, West Melbourne, Victoria, West Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), Victoria. Festival Hall first opened its doors in 1913 as a roller-skating rink and later became a boxing arena. History The site began its sporting history as the West Melbourne Stadium (shortened to The Stadium) in 1913, developed by R.L.Baker, the Sydney boxing promoter, opening just in time for the Mehegan-Wells fight of 3 November 1913. In 1915 it came under the control of John Wren (chairman) and Dick Lean (general manager) of Stadiums Limited as a multi-function venue for boxing and pro wrestling. Leszek Drogosz
Leszek Melchior Drogosz (6 January 1933 – 7 September 2012) was a Polish boxer and actor. Drogosz was born in Kielce. He thrice won the gold medal at the European Amateur Boxing Championships in the Light welterweight division at Warsaw 1953 and West Berlin 1955, and in the Welterweight division at Lucerne 1959. He participated in the Summer Olympics in Helsinki 1952, Melbourne 1956, and Rome 1960. He won the bronze medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. He was eight-time winner of the Polish Boxing Championship (1953, 1954, 1955, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1964, 1967). Following his boxing career, Drogosz became an actor in Polish movies. Harry Perry (boxer)
Harry Perry (2 December 1934 – 22 January 2021) was a member of the 1956 and 1960 Irish Olympic boxing teams. He also competed in the European Amateur Boxing Championships in 1955 and 1959 winning the bronze medal in the welterweight division in 1959. He was inducted into the Irish Boxing Hall of Fame in 2007. He died in January 2021, aged 86.
