Boxer (band)
Boxer were a rock band formed by singer and keyboardist Mike Patto and guitarist Ollie Halsall in 1975. They signed to Virgin and three albums followed, '' Below the Belt'' (1975), '' Absolutely'' (1977) and '' Bloodletting'' (1979), which also featured Bobby Tench and Boz Burrell. The band dissolved after ''Absolutely'' when Patto became ill. The band was managed by Nigel Thomas who secured a five-album deal over five years with CBS, reputed to have been worth £1.2million, and was never fully executed due to Patto's death on 4 March 1979. During a six-year period, Boxer also toured the US and Europe. Virgin Records is a British record label owned by Universal Music Group. They were originally founded as a British independent record label in 1972 by entrepreneurs Richard Branson, Simon Draper, Nik Powell, and musician Tom Newman (musician), Tom Newman. Tim Hinkley
Timothy Alan Hinkley (25 May 1946 – 21 August 2024) was an English singer-songwriter, keyboardist and record producer. Born in London, Hinkley started playing in youth club bands in the early 1960s, with bands including the Copains, Boys and the Freeman Five. During this time he turned down an offer to join the Konrads, which featured Davy Jones, who later changed his name to David Bowie. Other early associations were with the Bo Street Runners, Chicago Blues Line and Patto's People. As a session musician Hinkley recorded with many artists, including George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Van Morrison, Johnny Hallyday, Steve Marriott, Alvin Lee, Al Stewart, Roger Chapman, Humble Pie, Whitesnake, Dr. Feelgood, Roger Daltrey, Thin Lizzy and Alexis Korner. An extended play (EP) is a Sound recording and reproduction, musical recording that contains more tracks than a Single (music), single but fewer than an album. Contemporary EPs generally contain up to eight tracks and have a playing time of 15 to 30 minutes. An EP is usually less cohesive than an album and more "non-committal". Colin Larkin (writer)
Colin Larkin (born 1949) is a British music writer. He founded and was the editor-in-chief of '' The Encyclopedia of Popular Music''. Along with the ten-volume encyclopedia, Larkin also wrote the book '' All Time Top 1000 Albums'', and edited the ''Guinness Who's Who of Jazz'', the ''Guinness Who's Who of Blues'', and the ''Virgin Encyclopedia of Heavy Rock''. He has over 650,000 copies in print. Early life Larkin was born in Dagenham, Essex. He spent much of his early childhood attending the travelling fair where his father, who worked by day as a plumber for the council, moonlighted on the waltzers to make ends meet. Bloodletting (Boxer Album)
''Bloodletting'' is an album by the rock band Boxer, released on the Virgin record label in 1979. Their third album in order of release, it had in fact been recorded in 1976 after their debut '' Below the Belt''. It was also a posthumous release for band leader Mike Patto, who had died of lymphatic leukemia in March 1979, and for bass player Keith Ellis, who had died December 1978. Patto was credited as writer of all the album's original songs. Also featured were cover versions of " Hey Bulldog" by Lennon and McCartney, Leonard Cohen's "Teachers", "Dinah Low" by Terry Stamp and Jim Avery (who also wrote "Town Drunk" on Boxer's debut album, '' Below The Belt'') and "The Loner" by Neil Young. Absolutely (Boxer Album)
''Absolutely'' was the second record by the band Boxer (band), Boxer, released in 1977 on the Epic Records, Epic record label. Singer/pianist Mike Patto had assembled a new-look lineup including bassist Tim Bogert from Vanilla Fudge, guitarist Adrian Fisher from Sparks (band), Sparks, Chris Stainton from Joe Cocker's band (and many others) along with drummer Eddie Tuduri from the American band Wha-Koo. The album was also released in the U.S. with a different cover. There had been rumours that George Martin was interested in working with Boxer. The album was eventually produced by Jeff Glixman, who had worked with The Allman Brothers Band, the Allman Brothers and Kansas (band), Kansas. Patto collaborated with all the band members to write the songs on this album. "Rich Man's Daughter" is a reworking of the same song recorded by the Boxer lineup for ''Bloodletting (Boxer album), Bloodletting'', which was recorded in 1976. This album was Patto's last recording. Below The Belt (Boxer Album)
''Below the Belt'' was the first album by Boxer, released on the Virgin label in January 1976. The album attracted less attention for its music than for its artwork. Photographed by Alex Henderson with graphics by Richard Evans, the cover featured model Stephanie Marrian spreadeagled and nude but for a pair of shoes, with a man's arm reaching up between her legs and his boxing-gloved hand hiding her genitalia. The back cover at first showed Stephanie in complete full-frontal nudity, but later pressings covered her up with the band's belt-styled logo. The cover was completely re-designed for the US market using the band photo from the inside of the UK gatefold cover.
