Catalogue Of Nebulae And Clusters Of Stars
The ''Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars'' (CN) is an astronomical catalogue of nebulae first published in 1786 by William Herschel, with the assistance of his sister Caroline Herschel. It was later expanded into the ''General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars'' (GC) by his son, John Herschel. The CN and GC are the precursors to John Louis Emil Dreyer's '' New General Catalogue'' (NGC) used by current astronomers. History The ''Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars'' was first published in 1786 by William Herschel in the ''Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London''. In 1789, he added another 1,000 entries, and finally another 500 in 1802, bringing the total to 2,500 entries. This catalogue originated the usage of letters and catalogue numbers as identifiers. Benjamin Boss
Benjamin Boss (January 9, 1880 – October 17, 1970) was an American astronomer. He served as the director of both the Dudley Observatory in Schenectady, New York and the Department of Meridian Astrometry of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Biography Boss was born in Albany, New York to astronomer Lewis Boss and Helen M. (Hutchinson) Boss. After attending The Albany Academy, he graduated from Harvard University in 1901 and worked at Dudley Observatory until 1905. Following a year at the U. S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., he became director of the U.S. Naval Observatory at Samoa and helped organized the expedition to Flint Island to observe the 1908 solar eclipse. He served as director from 1906-1908. He joined the Department of Meridian Astrometry of the Carnegie Institution of Washington in 1908, working as a secretary until 1912 when he became acting director. Lewis Boss
Lewis Boss (26 October 1846 – 5 October 1912) was an American astronomer. He served as the director of the Dudley Observatory in Schenectady, New York. Early life Boss was born in Providence, Rhode Island to Samuel P. and Lucinda (née Joslin) Boss, and attended secondary school at the Lapham Institute in North Scituate and the New Hampton Institution in New Hampshire. In 1870, he graduated from Dartmouth College, then went to work as a clerk for the U.S. Government. Career He served as an assistant astronomer for a government expedition to survey the U.S- Canada–United States border. In 1876 he became the directory of the Dudley Observatory in Schenectady, New York. Boss is noted for his work in cataloguing the locations and proper motions of stars.
