Bosko
Bosko is an animated cartoon character created by animators Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising. Bosko was the first recurring character in Leon Schlesinger's cartoon series and was the star of thirty-nine ''Looney Tunes'' shorts released by Warner Bros. He was voiced by Carman Maxwell, Bernard B. Brown, Johnny Murray, and Philip Hurlic during the 1920s and 1930s and once by Don Messick during the 1990s. Creation and the first film In 1927, Harman and Ising worked for the Walt Disney Studios on a series of live-action/animated short subjects known as the Alice Comedies. The two animators created Bosko in 1928 to capitalize on the recent success of talkies in the motion picture industry. Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising were an American animation team and company known for founding the Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer animation studios. In 1929, the studio was founded under the name Harman-Ising Productions, producing ''Looney Tunes'' and '' Merrie Melodies'' for Leon Schlesinger from 1930 to 1933. From 1934 to 1938, Harman-Ising produced the '' Happy Harmonies'' series, with William Hanna as their employee. Early history Harman and Ising first worked in animation in 1922 at Laugh-O-Gram Studio, Walt Disney's studio in Kansas City. When Disney moved operations to California, Harman was back at United Film Ad Service and Ising had a photofinishing business. Rudolf Carl "Rudy" Ising ( ; August 7, 1903 – July 18, 1992) was an American animator best known for collaborating with Hugh Harman to establish the Warner Bros. and MGM Cartoon studios during the early years of the golden age of American animation. In 1940, Ising produced William Hanna and Joseph Barbera's first cartoon, '' Puss Gets the Boot'', a cartoon featuring characters later known as Tom and Jerry. Personal life Rudolf Carl Ising was born in Kansas City, Missouri on August 7, 1903. He was married twice, first to Maxine Jennings between 1936 until their divorce in 1940, and later to Cynthia Westlake from 1941 until his death, with whom he had a son, Rudolf Ising, Jr. Ising died of cancer in Newport Beach on 18 July 1992 and is buried at Pacific View Memorial Park in California. Johnny Murray (June 12, 1904 – August 1, 1956) was an American voice actor. In 1929, he was under a contract with First National Pictures to sing for Richard Barthelmess in his films; he provided Barthelmess's voice in '' Weary River''. He is most famous today for his role as Bosko, the first star of Warner Brothers cartoons, starting with '' Bosko the Doughboy''. Hugh Harman (August 31, 1903 – November 25, 1982) was an American animator. He was known for creating the Warner Bros. Cartoons and MGM Cartoons studios and his collaboration with Rudolf Ising during the Golden Age of American animation. Career He began his work with Walt Disney in 1922, working on Disney's early Laugh-O-Gram Cartoons. When that company went bankrupt, Harman and partner Rudolf Ising tried to start a new series based on the ''Arabian Nights'', but were unable to obtain funding. Disney called them back when he began work for Charles Mintz, producing the Alice Comedies live-action/animation hybrid shorts and the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons. After a dispute over money, Mintz forced out Disney in 1928 and lured most of his animators, Harman and Ising included, to join him. The company, Bosco Products, Inc., is based in Towaco, New Jersey, and products are sold throughout the United States and Europe. Carman Griffin Maxwell (December 27, 1902 – September 22, 1987) was an American animator and voice actor. Maxwell was born in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and later moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He began his career with Walt Disney at the Laugh-O-Gram Studio where Maxwell, along with Hugh Harman, Rudolf Ising, and Friz Freleng, was part of the unit that eventually broke away from Disney to form the nucleus of what later became the Warner Bros. animation studio (under contract with Leon Schlesinger).
