Borough Gardens, Dorchester
The Borough Gardens is a public open space in Dorchester, in Dorset, England, It was opened in 1896, and is listed Grade II in Historic England's Register of Parks and Gardens. The gardens are owned and maintained by Dorchester Town Council. History and description The rectangular site, longer from north to south, has an area of , and is bounded by Albert Road in the north, by Cornwall Road in the west, in the east by West Walks Road (part of the Town Walks), and in the south by a footpath between Cornwall Road and Bowling Alley Walk. To create the gardens, Dorchester Corporation in 1895 purchased from the Duchy of Cornwall of land, which would become the northern part of the Gardens, and purchased from S. R. Harris a house and nursery gardens, which would be the southern part. The park was designed by William Goldring. Dorchester ( ) is the county town of Dorset, England. It is situated between Poole and Bridport on the A35 trunk route. A historic market town, Dorchester is on the banks of the River Frome, Dorset, River Frome to the south of the Dorset Downs and north of the South Dorset Ridgeway that separates the area from Weymouth, Dorset, Weymouth, to the south. William Goldring
William Goldring (May 1854 – 26 February 1919) was a landscape architect, and naturalist. Goldring arrived in Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (1875) where he was in charge of the Herbaceous Department at the world-famous botanical garden. He served as the Assistant Editor of '' The Garden'' (1879), and the Editor of ''Woods and Forests'' (1883-1886). He was also President of the Kew Guild, The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, England (1913). Goldring's work included many private houses, hospitals, asylums and public parks in England, Wales, India, and the United States of America. He is responsible for work on nearly 700 different garden landscape projects in England alone. Goldring was born at West Dean, near Chichester. He died near Kew after suffering from asthma and bronchial problems. Town Walks, Dorchester
The Town Walks are a series of public walks in Dorchester, Dorset, England, along the former Roman defences of the town. Description History The first defences of the Roman town of Durnovaria were an earthen bank and ditch, constructed not earlier than 130 AD. Stone walls were built along the front of the bank at a later time, perhaps in the 4th century. During the medieval period the defences continued to be in use, the ditch being recut in the 14th or 15th century. Veitch Nurseries
The Veitch Nurseries were the largest group of family-run plant nurseries in Europe during the 19th century. Started by John Veitch sometime before 1808, the original nursery grew substantially over several decades and was eventually split into two separate businesses—based at Chelsea and Exeter—as it became unfeasible to run the whole operation from one location. There was a Veitch Nursery in Kingston at Coombe, on Kingston Hill. Famous plant hunters in the Victorian period employed by the Veitch family include the brothers Thomas Lobb and William Lobb from Cornwall and David Bowman. The Veitch's ability to grow exotic plants is noted in William Jackson Hooker's description of '' Verticordia nitens'', and they were able to supply a specimen for its illustration. Dorset Regiment
The Dorset Regiment was a line infantry regiment of the British Army in existence from 1881 to 1958, being the List of British Army regiments (1881), county regiment of Dorset. Until 1951, it was formally called the Dorsetshire Regiment, although usually known as "The Dorsets". In 1958, after service in the Second Boer War along with World War I and World War II, the Dorset Regiment was amalgamated with the Devonshire Regiment to form the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment.
