Bolivar, Alabama
Bolivar, also known as Widows, is an unincorporated community in northern Jackson County, Alabama, United States. It is located on Alabama State Route 277, halfway between Bridgeport and Stevenson. It was originally called New Bolivar after many of the citizens of the old community of Bolivar, which was located near the current community of Edgefield near Stevenson, relocated to the railroad well after it was completed through the area in 1854. The old community faded away and New Bolivar never really grew. On original maps from the 1880s, New Bolivar was located where the former North Jackson Hospital stands on Alabama Highway 277. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Alabama State Route 277
State Route 277 (SR 277) is a state highway in the northern part of the U.S. state of Alabama, traveling along part of former U.S. Route 72 (US 72) in Jackson County. History Upon completion of the present US 72 expressway in the 1990s, the old road was given to the county and cities of Stevenson and Bridgeport to maintain as County Road 74 (CR 74), but the local governments convinced the state to take back the road, which was redesignated SR 277 in March 2003. County leaders and city leaders in Bridgeport and Stevenson were not happy about the road being their responsibility and turned down requests to take the road back several times. The roadway has many bridges and is designed in such a way that maintenance of the road was deemed too expensive for Jackson County. Bridgeport, Alabama
Bridgeport is a city in Jackson County, Alabama, United States. At the time of 2010 census the population was 2,418, down from 2,728 in 2000. Bridgeport is included in the Chattanooga-Cleveland-Dalton, TN-GA-AL Combined Statistical Area. History Bridgeport developed after the 1840s, when European Americans established a riverboat landing here along the Tennessee River. This landing was a place for local farmers to trade their crops for other goods. Within a few years, a small hamlet known as "Jonesville" had developed around the landing, and included a trading post, gristmill, warehouses, and several saloons. Stevenson is a city in Jackson County, Alabama, United States, and is included in the Chattanooga-Cleveland-Dalton, TN-GA-AL Combined Statistical Area. Sources listed either 1866 or 1867 as the year of incorporation, but that seems to conflict with the dates given for the town being granted a charter. It did not first appear on the U.S. Census until 1880, where it was the second largest town in Jackson County behind Scottsboro. Since 1900, it has been the third largest town behind either Scottsboro and Bridgeport or vice versa. At the 2010 census, the population of the city was 2,046, up from 1,770 in 2000.
