Bogë, Albania
Bogë ( sq-definite, Boga) is a village in northern Albania. It was in the former Shkrel municipality, but following local government reform in 2015, it became part of the municipality Malësi e Madhe. Bogë was a historical ''bajrak'' of Kelmendi tribe in the north headwaters of Prroni i thate, bounded to the north by lands that were inhabited by the Shala; to the south by land inhabited by the Ducaj. The village was attached to Shkrel despite originally being part of Kelmendi. The village consisted of 75 families in 1908 according to Edith Durham, all of which were Catholics. The village is divided in two sections, consisting of the Preçaj and Kolaj neighborhoods. Etymology The etymology of ''Boga'' is debated. One hypothesis suggests that it is derived from Albanian '' bokë'', meaning "barren/rocky farmland" or "mountain side". Another view argues that it may be a derivative of Slavic ''bog'' ("god"). Malësi e Madhe () is a municipality in Shkodër County, in northwestern Albania Albania ( ; or ), officially the Republic of Albania (), is a country in Southeast Europe. Bajrak
The ''bajrak'' (; pronounced or , meaning "banner" or "flag") was an Ottoman Empire, Ottoman Administrative division, territorial unit, consisting of villages in mountainous frontier regions of the Balkans, from which military recruitment was based. It was introduced in the late 17th century and continued its use until the end of Ottoman rule in Rumelia. The bajrak included one or more clans. It was especially implemented in northern Albania and in parts of Kosovo (Sanjak of Prizren and Sanjak of Scutari), where in the 19th century these regions constituted the frontier with the Principality of Serbia and Principality of Montenegro. These sanjaks had notable communities of Gheg Albanians (Muslims and Catholics), Serbs and Muslims (ethnic group), Slavic Muslims. Kelmendi
Kelmendi is a historical Albanian tribes, Albanian tribe (''fis'') and region in Malësia (Kelmend (municipality), Kelmend municipality) and eastern Montenegro (parts of Gusinje Municipality). It is located in the upper valley of the Cem (river), Cem river and its tributaries in the Accursed Mountains range of the Dinaric Alps. The Vermosh river springs in the Vermosh, village of the same name, which is Albania's northernmost village. Vermosh pours into Lake Plav. Kelmendi is mentioned as early as the 14th century and as a territorial tribe it developed in the 15th century. Shala is a Tribes of Albania, historical tribe and region of northern Albania in the valley of the river Shalë (river), Shalë, in the Dukagjin highlands. At the end of the 19th century the tribe was Catholic and had c. 3,000 members and 700 households Etymology The etymology of ''Shala'' is unclear. It has been connected to the Albanian term ''shalë (sinë)'' denoting an arid or infertile land, however, this etymology does not seem likely considering that the Shala Valley is among the only regions in the Accursed Mountains, Albanian Alps suitable for agriculture. Edith Durham
Edith Durham, (8 December 1863 – 15 November 1944) was a British artist, anthropologist and writer who is best known for her anthropological accounts of life in Albania in the early 20th century. Her advocacy on behalf of the Albanian cause and her Albanophilia gained her the devotion of many Albanians who consider her a national heroine. Early life Durham was the eldest of nine children. Her father, Arthur Edward Durham, was a distinguished London surgeon. She attended Bedford College (1878–1882), followed by the Royal Academy of Arts, to train as an artist. She exhibited widely and contributed a number of detailed drawings to the amphibia and reptiles volume of the ''Cambridge Natural History'' (published 1899).
