Bodega (store)
A bodega is a small owner-operated convenience store serving hot and prepared food, often open late hours and typically with ethnic market influences. The NYC Department of Health defines a bodega as any store of sufficient size "that sells milk, meat or eggs but is not a specialty store (bakery, butcher, chocolate shop, etc) and doesn't have more than two cash registers". Most famously located on New York City's street corners and associated with immigrant communities as well as the Puerto Rican community, they are renowned for their convivial culture and colorful character. As of 2020, there were an estimated 13,000 bodegas across the city. Puerto Rican Migration To New York City
The first Puerto Ricans known to have migrated to New York City did so in the mid-1800s when Spain ruled Puerto Rico. Another wave of Puerto Ricans migrated to New York City after the Spanish–American War in 1898. Though no longer subjects of Spain, they were now citizens of an American possession and needed passports to travel to the contiguous United States. That was until 1917, when the United States Congress approved Jones–Shafroth Act which gave Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico U.S. citizenship with certain limitations. Puerto Ricans living in the Mainland United States, however, were given full American citizenship and were allowed to seek political office in the states in which they resided. Two months later, when Congress passed the Selective Service Act, conscription was extended to the Puerto Ricans both on the island and on the mainland. Yemeni Americans are Americans of Yemeni ancestry. According to an estimate in 2020, more than 90,000 Yemenis live in the United States. La Marqueta is a marketplace under the Metro-North Railroad's Park Avenue Viaduct between 111th Street and 116th Street on Park Avenue in East Harlem in Manhattan, New York City. Its official address is 1590 Park Avenue. In its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s, over 500 vendors operated out of La Marqueta, and it was an important social and economic venue for Hispanic New York.
