Blue Canyon–Nyack Airport
Blue Canyon–Nyack Airport is an airport in Emigrant Gap, Placer County, California. The airport is served by a single asphalt runway, 15/33, the dimensions of which are 3,300 × 50 feet (1,006 × 15 metres). The runway is closed and unlit from sunset to sunrise. The airport is situated at an elevation of above sea level in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The airport is surrounded by trees and is closed during the winter because there are no de-icing or snow removal facilities at the airport. It began operations in May 1941 and is publicly owned. Emigrant Gap
Emigrant Gap is a gap in a ridge on the California Trail as it crosses the Sierra Nevada, to the west of what is now known as Donner Pass. Here the cliffs are so steep that, back in the 1840s, the pioneers on their way to California had to lower their wagons on ropes in order to continue. The Emigrant Gap was so named because it was a low gap on a ridge where the emigrants' wagons crossed from the American River drainage to the Bear River (Feather River tributary), Bear River drainage. It was part of the Truckee Route, a portion of the California Trail by which pioneers, heading west, emigrated from the United States to California, which was part of Mexico until it was captured by the United States in the Mexican–American War (1846–1848). Emigrant Gap (formerly, Wilsons Ranch) is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California. The Emigrant Gap community is located southwest of the Emigrant Gap landmark. It lies at an elevation of 5190 feet (1582 m). The Wilsons Ranch post office opened in 1865, changed its name to Emigrant Gap in 1868. The name Wilsons Ranch honored a stage stop operator. A helipad is the landing area of a heliport, in use by helicopters, powered lift, and vertical lift aircraft to land on surface. While helicopters and powered lift aircraft are able to operate on a variety of relatively flat surfaces, a fabricated helipad provides a clearly marked hard surface away from obstacles where such aircraft can land safely.
