Blackdown Tableland National Park
Blackdown Tableland is a national park in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia. Geography The park is in Central Queensland, northwest of Brisbane. The mountainous terrain of the tablelands provides a unique landscape featuring gorges, waterfalls and diverse vegetation. The Blackdown Tableland is a sandstone plateau rising abruptly from the plains below. Many creeks on the Tableland have developed gorges and waterfalls along their courses, the most notable of which drains in to the spectacular Rainbow Falls (Gudda Gumoo) over a drop. Some of the creeks on the Tableland are catchment fed by rain and often dry up, and some are spring fed and always flow even just a small amount. The Blackdown Cadet Summer Training Centre is a training centre for Cadets Canada located in CFB Borden, Ontario. Formerly known as the Army Cadet Summer Training Center Blackdown for Royal Canadian Army Cadets, it includes training for the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and Royal Canadian Sea Cadets since 2003. Its current commanding officer is LtCol David Forster. Blackdown, Dorset
Blackdown is a village in Broadwindsor parish in the west of Dorset, England, situated on the B3165 road west of Beaminster. It had a population of 128 at the 2001 Census. The village lies at the foot of Blackdown Hill, which at is one of Dorset's high points from which there are extensive views of the local area. History The Chapel of Ease dedicated to the Holy Trinity was built in 1840 on the site of a former chapel building which had become derelict. There are a few graves which are earlier than 1840. On the night of 16–17 December 1961 the chapel was destroyed by a fire due to a wood-burning stove which had been lit overnight for a service the next day. The church was rebuilt and rededicated in 1964. Buried in the graveyard is John Anthony Brown, who was killed by his wife Elizabeth Martha Brown at nearby Birdsmoregate in 1856. Black Down, Somerset
Black Down is the highest hill in the Mendip Hills, Somerset, in south-western England. Black Down lies just a few miles eastward of the Bristol Channel at Weston-super-Mare, and provides a view over the Chew Valley. The summit is marked with an Ordnance Survey trig point, the base of which has been rebuilt by the Mendip Hills AONB authority. The shortest route of ascent goes from the Burrington Combe car park and is approximately 1 km long. Black Down is an open-access area mostly consisting of moors, with dense cover of associated vegetation such as heather and bracken. According to a local organization's newsletter, the name "Black Down" comes from the Saxon word 'Blac' or 'Bloec' meaning bleak, 'Dun' meaning down or fort. Blackdown, or Black Down, summit elevation AMSL, is the highest point in both the historic county of Sussex and the South Downs National Park. Blackdown Hill is a prominent elevation, high, south west of the town of Crewkerne, in the county of Dorset in the south west of England. Its prominence of means it is listed as one of the Tumps. Blackdown Hills
The Blackdown Hills, or Blackdowns, are a range of hills along the Somerset-Devon border in south-western England. The plateau is dominated by hard chert bands of Upper Greensand with some remnants of chalk, and is cut through by river valleys. The Blackdown Hills were designated in 1991 as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). In November 2023, AONBs became National Landscapes. The hills support an extensive range of wildlife leading to the designation of 16 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). There is evidence of human occupation since the Iron Age. Fortifications include the remains of ancient hill forts, Norman architecture, Norman motte-and-bailey castles and Second World War airfields.
