Black Day (South Korea)
Black Day () is an unofficial holiday observed on April 14 each year. It is mostly observed in South Korea by singles. The day is intentionally contrasted to Valentine's Day and White Day, which are both on the 14th day of their respective months (February and March). People who did not receive gifts on either of those holidays gather on Black Day to eat ''jajangmyeon'', noodles with black bean sauce. Origins In South Korea, Valentine's Day and White Day are both celebrated as occasions to give gifts to significant others. Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14, when women buy men gifts (usually chocolate). Black Day originally did not exist until after Valentines Day and White Day became popular. Uniquely, Japan and South Korea are the only countries that celebrate Valentine's Day twice. Jajangmyeon
''Jajangmyeon'' () or ''jjajangmyeon'' () is a Korean Chinese noodle dish topped with a thick sauce made of '' chunjang'', diced pork, and vegetables. It is a variation of the Chinese dish '' zhajiangmian''; it developed in the late 19th century, during the Joseon period, when Chinese migrant workers from Shandong arrived in Incheon. The Korean variant of the dish uses a darker and sweeter sauce than the Chinese version. Variants of the dish use seafood, or other meats. Name ''Jajang'' or ''jjajang'' is borrowed from the Chinese word ''zhájiàng'' (), which means "fried sauce", while ''myeon'' (; 麵) means "noodles", itself a Sino-Korean loanword in place of the native ''guksu'' (). Singles Awareness Day (or Singles Appreciation Day) is an unofficial holiday some celebrate on February 15 each year. It is an unofficial holiday celebrated by single people. It serves as a complement to Valentine's Day for people who are not married or in a romantic relationship. It is a celebration of love in all forms recognizing the love between friends, family and loving yourself. Some people who observe Singles Awareness Day do so out of spite for Valentine's Day, as a Hallmark holiday, or for other reasons. Singles Awareness Day is also referred to as an antithesis of Valentine's Day, especially when celebrated on February 14. Singles' Day () or Double 11 () is an unofficial Chinese holiday for people who are not in a relationship. The date, 11 November (11/11), was chosen because the numeral 1 resembles a bare stick (), Chinese Internet slang for an unmarried man. The four "1"s also refer to the demographic group of single people. Ironically, the holiday has become a popular date on which to celebrate relationships: more than 4,000 couples got married in Beijing on this date in 2011, far greater than the daily average of 700 marriages. Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process with the purpose of encouraging eligible singles to meet new potential partners in a very short period of time, so that interested pairs can continue meeting each other after the event.
