Björn Knutson
Björn Knutson commonly spelt Knutsson (born 27 April 1938 in Sweden) is a former motorcycle speedway rider who won the Speedway World Championship in 1965 and was a four-time winner of the World Team Cup. He gained the nickname 'The Crown Prince' for his speedway success. He earned 42 caps for the Sweden national speedway team. Career Knutson also won the Speedway Swedish Individual Championship in 1961 and 1963. He first rode in Great Britain after signing for Southampton Saints, during the 1959 Speedway National League. He topped the team's averages in 1960 and became one of the league's leading riders during the period. He outscored his teammate Barry Briggs at Southampton in both 1962 and 1963 at a time, when Briggs was in the middle of winning his four world championships. Vargarna
Vargarna () is a Swedish motorcycle speedway team based in Norrköping, Sweden, representing SMK Östgöta. The team race at Norrköping Motorstadion. They ride in the Elitserien and are six times champions of Sweden. History 1948 to 1954 Vargarna was one of the seven inaugural members of the Swedish speedway league, which started during the 1948 Swedish speedway season. Their first significant riders were Olle Nygren and Helge Brinkeback, who would both become Swedish champions. Th eteam raced at the old Norrköping Motorstadion in Dagsbergsfältet (the site of the modern day Medley Centralbadet swimming complex). Olle Nygren
Harald Olof Ingemar Nygren (11 November 1929 – 13 February 2021) was a Swedish motorcycle speedway rider, who reached the finals of the Speedway World Championship five times. He earned 90 caps for the Sweden national speedway team. Career Nygren was the inaugural Swedish Champion during the 1949 Swedish speedway season. He also helped his Swedish team Vargarna win the Swedish Speedway Team Championship. He started riding in Great Britain during the 1951 Speedway National League, when he joined the Harringay Racers. He soon established himself as a leading rider, recording exceptional averages for New Cross Rangers and then Bristol Bulldogs during the 1953 Speedway National League season. After a season with Wimbledon Dons in 1954 he would not ride in Britain again until 1960. Rune Sörmander
Rune Bertil Leopold Sörmander (29 November 1929 – 20 December 2020) was an international motorcycle speedway rider from Sweden. He earned 66 caps for the Sweden national speedway team. Speedway career Sörmander was one of speedway's leading riders during the 1950s and 1960s, he was a three times champion of Sweden, winning the Swedish Championship in 1955, 1958 and 1959. On 22 June 1952 he won the Continental Speedway Final, which formed part of the 1952 Individual Speedway World Championship. He reached the final of the Speedway World Championship on seven occasions (1953, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962) and the final of the Individual Speedway Long Track World Championship three times (1959, 1961, 1962). Ove Fundin
Ove Fundin (born 23 May 1933) is a Swedish former professional motorcycle speedway rider. He competed in the Speedway World Championships from 1951 to 1970. Fundin is notable for winning the Speedway World Championship Final five times (1956, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1967), a record bettered only by Ivan Mauger and fellow Swede Tony Rickardsson who each won six World Championships. He finished runner-up in the championship 3 times (1957–59) and was third in 1962, 1964 and 1965 meaning that from his first win in 1956 until his last in 1967, Fundin did not finish lower than a podium place in a record eleven World Finals. 1960 Speedway World Team Cup
1960 Speedway World Team Cup was the first edition of the FIM Speedway World Team Cup to determine the team world champions. The final took place in Gothenburg, Sweden. The World Champion title was won by Sweden team (44 pts) who beat England (30 pts), Czechoslovakia (15 pts) and Poland (7 pts). Sweden's reigning World Champion Ove Fundin went through the entire World Team Cup undefeated. This feat would not be matched until Australia's Jason Crump went through the 2001 Speedway World Cup undefeated. To honour Fundin's deeds in 1960, the winners of the current Speedway World Cup (which replaced the Team World Cup in 2001) receive the Ove Fundin Trophy. 1966 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1966 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 21st edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. In the final in Gothenburg New Zealander Barry Briggs equalled the record of Ove Fundin by winning his fourth World title. Norwegian Sverre Harrfeldt took silver and Pole Antoni Woryna took bronze. Ivan Mauger, a 26-year-old New Zealander who had won the European Final qualifier finished fourth. Format changes The format of the Championship changed for the 1966 event. With the final to be held in Sweden, six riders from Sweden would be eligible for the World Final by finishing in the top six of the Swedish finals. Ullevi, sometimes known as Nya Ullevi (, ''New Ullevi''), is a multi-purpose stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden.
