Jussi Björling
Johan Jonatan "Jussi" Björling ( , ; 5 February 19119 September 1960) was a Swedish tenor. One of the leading operatic singers of the 20th century, Björling appeared for many years at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and less frequently at the major European opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London and La Scala in Milan. He sang the Italian, French and Russian opera repertory with taste. Bjorling was ranked the greatest singer of the 20th century by a poll of music critics in ''Classic CD'' magazine (UK) in July 1999. Early life Björling (surname also spelled as "Bjoerling" and "Bjorling" in English-language sources) was born in Stora Tuna, Borlänge, Dalarna, Sweden, in February 1911. The midwife's register shows he was born on 5 February, but the church baptism records erroneously show 2 February, and that was the day on which he celebrated his birthday throughout his whole life. Johan Alfred Björling
Johan Alfred Björling (19 October 1871 – 1892/1893) was a Swedish botanist and Arctic explorer. He led the ill-fated Swedish NW Greenland Expedition, also known as Björling–Kallstenius Expedition, in 1892. Life Björling was born on 19 October 1871 in Stockholm, Sweden and was the son of Johan Alfred Björling and Lydia Kastengren. He passed his ''studentexamen'' in 1891 and took part in the 1890 expedition to Spitsbergen and shipped in 1891 a Greenlandic merchant ship to the west coast of Greenland, where he using a rowboat penetrated north to the area of Devils Thumb. He died in 1892 or 1893 in the Canadian Arctic. He was the nephew of Swedish mathematician Emanuel Björling (1808–1872). Gunnar Björling
Gunnar Olof Björling, (31 May 1887 – 11 July 1960) was a Swedish-speaking Finnish poet. He was one of the leading figures of Finnish-Swedish modernist literature, along with Elmer Diktonius, Edith Södergran and Hagar Olsson. Biography Björling was born in Helsinki, to Edvard Björling (Åberg) and Lydia Maria Gustafsdotter Björling, with his brothers Bruno and Torsten. He spent his childhood in Helsinki and Viipuri, and the summer months in Kangasala. Between 1901 and 1902 he attended Hamina Cadet School, and then studied philosophy at the University of Helsinki. One of his teachers was the internationally renowned sociologist Edvard Westermarck, who greatly influenced Björling's thinking. Ewa Björling
Ewa Helena Björling (born 3 May 1961) is a Swedish politician and a member of the Moderate Party. She served as Minister for Foreign Trade from 2007 to 2014 and as Minister for Nordic Cooperation from 2010 to 2014 in the Swedish Government. She was a member of the Swedish Riksdag for Stockholm County from 2002 to 2014. On 16 October 2014, she submitted her resignation from the Riksdag and announced that she will retire from politics. Anna-Lisa Björling (née Emy Anna-Lisa Berg; 15 March 1910 – 24 November 2006) was a Swedish opera singer and actress. She was married to tenor Jussi Björling, from 1935 until his death in 1960. Born in Stockholm, Anna-Lisa was a soprano who had studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Carl Georg Björling
Carl Georg Björling (1870-1934) was a Swedish lawyer and professor. Life He was born on 16 September 1870 in Halmstad, Sweden, and was the son of Carl Fabian Björling and his wife Minna Agnes Cecilia von Schéele. He died on 14 March 1934. Career He attained his Juris Doctor degree from Lund University. He worked as a clerk at the Svea Court of Appeal. He later became a professor and vice-rector at Lund University. Emanuel Björling
Emanuel Gabriel Björling (2 December 1808 – 3 November 1872) was a Swedish mathematician. He was the father of mathematician Carl Fabian Björling. Career In 1836, he became the associate professor of mechanics at the University of Uppsala. He was a lecturer and later a rector at Västerås grammar school. Carl Fabian Emanuel Björling (30 November 1839 – 6 May 1910) was a Swedish mathematician and meteorologist. Life He was born on 30 November 1839 in Västerås, Sweden, and died on 6 May 1910. He was the son of mathematician Emanuel Björling and father of lawyer Carl Georg Björling. Career He attained his Ph.D. from Uppsala University in 1863. In 1863, he became an associate professor of mathematics at Uppsala University. In 1867 he was appointed a lecturer of mathematics and physics at the Halmstad grammar school. From 1873 to 1904 he was the professor of mathematics at Lund University. In 1886, he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Sigurd Björling
Sigurd Björling (2 November 1907 - 8 April 1983) was a Sweden, Swedish operatic baritone. He made his debut as Alfio in ''Cavalleria Rusticana'' in 1935 at Royal Swedish Opera. He specialized in Richard Wagner, Wagnerian roles, among them Wotan, Telramund, Amfortas, Hans Sachs and Kurwenal. His United States debut came on 3 October 1950 in San Francisco (as Kurwenal), and the following year he was the first postwar-Wotan at the Bayreuth Festival. On 15 November 1952 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, singing there for a full season.
