A Dutch baby pancake, sometimes called a German pancake, a Bismarck, a Dutch puff, Hooligan, or a Hootenanny, is a dish that is similar to a large Yorkshire pudding. Unlike most pancakes, Dutch babies are baked in the oven, rather than being fried. They are generally thicker than most pancakes and contain no chemical leavening ingredients such as baking powder. They can be sweet or savory and can be served at any meal. The idea of a Dutch baby pancake may have been derived from the German '' Pfannkuchen'', but the current form originated in the US in the early 1900s. A Berliner or Krapfen is a German jam doughnut with no central hole, made from sweet Yeast, yeast dough fried in lard or cooking oil, with a jam filling, and usually covered in powdered sugar. History Sugar was very costly until the 16th century, and early doughnuts were usually stuffed with savory fillings like cheese, meat and mushroom. When imports from Caribbean sugar plantations made sugar more affordable, fruit preserves gained in popularity. In 1485, the first German-language cookbook to be published in printed form ''Kuechenmeisterei'' was published in Nuremberg and remained in print at least until 1674 with 20 editions (it was later translated into Polish in 1532). ''Sink the Bismarck!'' is a 1960 black-and-white CinemaScope British war film based on the 1959 book '' The Last Nine Days of the Bismarck'' by C. S. Forester. It stars Kenneth More and Dana Wynter and was directed by Lewis Gilbert. To date, it is the only film made that deals directly with the operations, chase and sinking of the battleship by the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Although war films were common in the 1960s, ''Sink the Bismarck!'' was seen as something of an anomaly, with much of its time devoted to the "unsung back-room planners as much as on the combatants themselves". ''Bismarck'' is a 1940 German historical film directed by Wolfgang Liebeneiner and starring Paul Hartmann, Friedrich Kayßler, and Lil Dagover. This film depicts the life of the Prussian statesman Otto von Bismarck, a German nationalist and lonely genius who withstands the Reichstag to act on behalf of the people. RMS ''Majestic'' was a British ocean liner working on the White Star Line's North Atlantic run, originally launched in 1914 as the Hamburg America Liner SS ''Bismarck''. At 56,551 gross register tons, she was the largest ship ever operated by the White Star Line under its own flag and the largest ship in the world until completion of in 1935. The third and largest member of the German ocean liner company Hamburg America Line's trio of transatlantic liners, her completion was delayed by World War I.
