The (Biographical Dictionary of Finland, BLF) is a Finnish Swedish-language biographical dictionary that was published between 2008–2011. In Finland, ''Suomen kansallisbiografia'' ('the National Biography of Finland') was published between 2003–2007 in ten volumes, edited by historian and professor Matti Klinge. In 2008, the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland began publishing a corresponding Swedish-language national biographical dictionary, . The editorial board is chaired by professor Henrik Meinander and the chief editor is associate professor . The BLF is partly based on the content of the Finnish-language , from which articles are translated, but it also contains original articles – primarily about people connected to the Swedish-speaking culture in Finland – which have in turn been partly translated into . Society Of Swedish Literature In Finland
The Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (; SLS) is a scholarly society for the collection, archiving and dissemination of knowledge about Finland-Swedish culture. SLS publishes scholarly literature, maintains archives and libraries, funds research and awards literary and scholarly prizes and scholarships. SLS's activity is made possible by private donations. SLS is one of the largest managers of private charitable funds in Finland. SLS was established in 1885 in memory of the Finnish national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, during a time when it was felt that the Swedish language and Swedish culture in Finland were under threat from the Finnish side. Leading cultural figures endorsed the need for an organization to preserve and mediate the Swedish cultural heritage in Finland. Matti Klinge
Matti Klinge (31 August 1936 – 5 March 2023) was a Finnish historian. Klinge studied at the University of Helsinki and gained his Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D. in 1969. He later served as a visiting professor at the University of Paris (1970–1972) and held the Swedish Professorship of History at the University of Helsinki between 1975 and 2001. Klinge was one of the most prolific Finnish historians. Kligne died in March 2023, at the age of 86. Henrik Meinander
Carl Henrik Meinander (born 19 May 1960 in Helsinki), is a Finnish historian, PhD 1994. From 2002 Meinander is the keeper of the Swedish-speaking professorship in history (after Matti Klinge) at Helsinki University. He is the son of the famous archaeologist Carl Fredrik Meinander. Meinander has focused on the history of gymnastics in his doctoral dissertation ''Towards a bourgeois manhood'' (1994) and (1996). In , part 4 (1999) he appears as an unbiased interpreter of the Finnish republics history. He has also engaged himself in the public debate as columnist in the newspaper ''Hufvudstadsbladet''. The Swedish-speaking population of Finland (whose members are called by many names—see below; ; ) is a linguistic minority in Finland. They maintain a strong identity and are seen either as a separate cultural, ethnic or linguistic group or, occasionally, a distinct nationality. They speak Finland Swedish, which encompasses both a standard language and distinct dialects that are mutually intelligible with the dialects spoken in Sweden and, to a lesser extent, other Scandinavian languages.
