Big Valley is a small unincorporated community in Lassen County, California. As of July, 2007, its population is 1600. It is located northeast of Bieber, at an elevation of 4124 feet above sea level. History This town came to being due to the California Gold Rush. A post office operated at Big Valley from 1873 to 1875 and from 1876 to 1877. A newspaper, the Big Valley Gazette was printed from 1893 through 1956. Lassen County () is a county in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 32,730. The county seat and only incorporated city is Susanville. Lassen County comprises the Susanville, California, micropolitan statistical area. A former farming, mining and lumber area, its economy now depends on employment at one federal and two state prisons; the former in Herlong and the latter two in Susanville. In 2007, half the adults in Susanville worked in one of the facilities. Pit River
The Pit River is a major river draining from northeastern California into the state's Central Valley. The Pit, the Klamath and the Columbia are the only three rivers in the U.S. that cross the Cascade Range. The longest tributary of the Sacramento River, it contributes as much as eighty percent of their combined water volume into the Shasta Lake reservoir; the junction of their Shasta Lake arms is northeast of Shasta Dam. The main stem of the Pit River is long, and some water in the system flows to the Sacramento River measuring from the Pit River's longest source.
