Caroline County is a rural county located in the U.S. state of Maryland on its Eastern Shore. As of the 2020 census, the population was 33,293. Its county seat is Denton. Maryland Route 331 (MD 331) is a state highway on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the United States. Signed north-south, the route runs from Vienna in Dorchester County northwest to Easton in Talbot County, intersecting U.S. Route 50 (US 50) at both ends. MD 331 is a two-lane undivided road most of its length that passes mostly through agricultural areas. The road also passes through the communities of Hurlock and Preston along the way. It encounters several routes during its journey, including MD 14 near Rhodesdale and MD 16 in the Preston area, both of which the route forms concurrencies with. Maryland Route 578 (MD 578) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as Bethlehem Road, the state highway runs from MD 331 at Bethlehem east to MD 16 at Harmony. The first segment of MD 578 was completed in the mid-1930s; the remainder was built in the early 1940s. Route description MD 578 begins at an intersection with MD 331 (Dover Bridge Road) in Bethlehem. Bethlehem Road continues south as a county highway. MD 578 heads northeast as a two-lane undivided road through farmland. After passing Newton Road, the state highway crosses Hog Creek. Preston is a town in Caroline County, Maryland, United States. The population was 719 at the 2010 census. History Preston is home to the Linchester Mill, c. 1682. During the Revolutionary War it supplied grain to George Washington's troops. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 along with the Jacob and Hannah Leverton House. William Oswald Mills Sr. (August 12, 1924 – May 24, 1973), was a Republican U.S. congressman who represented the 1st Congressional district of Maryland from May 25, 1971 until his death in Easton, Maryland on May 24, 1973. Life and career Mills was born in Bethlehem, Maryland on August 12, 1924. He attended Caroline County, Maryland public schools, after graduating from Federalsburg High School in 1941, he then pursued military service. He served in the U.S. Army in 1942, during World War II, as part of general George Patton's Third Army during the crossing of the Rhine River in Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, he worked his way up in rank as the manager of the offices of: Easton, Maryland; Preston, Maryland; and Cambridge, Maryland of the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company from 1946 to 1962.
