Beslan
Beslan (; , ''Beslæn'', ) is a town and the administrative center of Pravoberezhny District of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania, Russia, located about north of the republic's capital Vladikavkaz, close to the border with the Republic of Ingushetia. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 36,728, making it the third largest town in the republic behind Vladikavkaz and Mozdok. It was previously known as ''Tulatovo/Tulatovskoye'' (until 1941) and ''Iriston'' (until 1950). History Beslan was founded in 1847 by migrants from elsewhere in Ossetia and was unofficially called Beslanykau ("the settlement of Beslan") after a local lord, Beslan Tulatov. In official use, however, the town was known after Tulatov's surname as Tulatovo or ''Tulatovskoye''. It was renamed Iriston (lit. ''Ossetia'') in 1941. Beslan School Siege
The Beslan school siege, also referred to as the Beslan school hostage crisis or the Beslan massacre, was an Islamic terrorism, Islamic terrorist attack that started on 1 September 2004. It lasted three days, and involved the imprisonment of more than 1,100 people as hostages, including 777 children, ending with the deaths of 334 people, 186 of them children, as well as 31 of the attackers. It is considered the deadliest school shooting in history. The crisis began when a group of armed terrorists occupied School Number One (SNO) in the town of Beslan, North Ossetia–Alania, North Ossetia (an autonomous republic in the North Caucasus region of Russia), on 1 September 2004. Yanis Kanidis (, ; January 1, 1930 – September 3, 2004) was a Russian physical education teacher, born in Georgia of Caucasus Greek origin. Hostage crisis When armed Chechen extremists took more than 1,200 school children and adults hostage on September 1, 2004, in the Russian town of Beslan in North Ossetia, in what has become known as the Beslan school hostage crisis, 74-year-old Kanidis insisted on staying with his students, helped them survive and ultimately died to save their lives. Two days after the start of the hostage taking, a number of nursing mothers were allowed to leave the building with their babies. Beslan Airport (, ) , also known as Vladikavkaz International Airport (, ), is a civilian airport in North Ossetia–Alania, Russia located northeast of Beslan and from Vladikavkaz. It is a small airport servicing medium-sized airliners. It has parking places for five large aircraft and nine smaller ones. In 2017, 349,684 passengers transited in this airport. The airport has two terminals, one domestic and one international. The international terminal serves occasional charter flights to Antalya (Turkey) and a few other destinations. Vladikavkaz, formerly known as Ordzhonikidze () or Dzaudzhikau (), is the capital city of North Ossetia–Alania, Russia.
