Bernardo, Texas
Bernardo is an unincorporated community in northeastern Colorado County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 155 in 2000. History German immigrants arrived in Texas in 1845 as members of the Adelsverein and were followed by other German immigrants. Instead of moving to the authorized colonization area, the Fisher-Miller land grant in west central Texas, where many German settlers had already established themselves, decided to stay where the frontier circumstances were less difficult. Because of the topography in the area, Bernardo was formerly known as Bernardo Prairie. It was formerly known as Braden, and among the first inhabitants were several families bearing that name. The community was situated near a major highway connecting Houston to inland towns and settlements. It functioned as a dumping ground for transporting cotton to Mexico during the American Civil War. Mentz, Texas
Mentz is an unincorporated community in northeastern Colorado County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 100 in 2000. History The majority of the community's settlers were German Catholics from Büdesheim, Hesse, who arrived around 1846. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Mainz produced a large number of the initial settlers. The settlement was first known as Neu Mainz by the Mainz Society, before changing to Mentz. In 1858, a tiny church was constructed by the settlers and given the name St. Roch after a chapel located near Büdesheim and Bingen. The post office serving the area was first founded in 1853 under the name San Bernard, changed to New Mainz in 1860, and closed in 1866. It was then reopened as Mentz in 1889, closed in 1896, reopened the following year, and moved to Alleyton in 1913. The Congregation of Divine Providence (or Sisters of Divine Providence) is the name of several Roman Catholic religious institutes of women which have developed from the work of Jean-Martin Moye (1730-1793), a French Catholic priest. They are dedicated to the instruction and care of the neediest of the world. Started in 1762, it took its final form in 1852. Moye saw the lack of educational opportunities for females in the rural sectors of his large parish in the Duchy of Lorraine, at that time an independent nation, speaking a form of the German language. San Bernard River
The San Bernard River is a river in Texas. Course San Bernard River flows from a spring near New Ulm, Texas to its mouth on the Gulf of Mexico, some to the southeast of the source. It passes through portions of Austin, Brazoria, Colorado, Fort Bend, Matagorda and Wharton counties. It passes alongside the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, which shelters one of the last populations of the critically endangered Attwater's prairie-chicken, a ground-dwelling grouse of the coastal prairie ecosystem. The San Bernard River is one of a small number of rivers in Texas which empties directly into the Gulf. Its mouth was impeded in 2005 causing it to drain into the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, but was later corrected. Cat Spring, Texas
Cat Spring is an unincorporated community in southern Austin County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, it had a population of 76 in 2000. Cat Spring was one of the first German/American settlements in Texas, and the location of Texas' first agricultural society. History Cat Spring was founded by immigrants from Oldenburg and Westphalia that was led by Ludwig Anton Siegmund von Roeder and Robert J. Kleberg in 1834, in which many of them were attracted to the area and the state by letters sent from Friedrich Ernst after he bought a plot of land in the Mill Creek Valley in 1831 and named for a nearby spring near the San Bernard River where a puma was killed by one of the German immigrants. Farm to Market Road 949 (FM 949) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Texas. The two-lane highway starts at FM 102 northwest of Eagle Lake in Colorado County, heads in a northerly direction across Interstate 10, swings northeast through the small communities of Bernardo and Cat Spring and ends at State Highway 36 (SH 36) near Peters in Austin County. Route description FM 949 begins near the one-time community of Ramsey, which was located on FM 102 between Eagle Lake and Alleyton.
