Benvolio
Benvolio Montague () is a fictional character in William Shakespeare's tragedy ''Romeo and Juliet''. He is Lord Montague's nephew and Romeo's cousin. Benvolio serves as an unsuccessful peacemaker in the play, attempting to prevent violence between the Capulet and Montague families. Sources In 1554, Matteo Bandello published the second volume of his ''Novelle'' which included his version of ''Giulietta e Romeo''. Bandello emphasises Romeo's initial depression and the feud between the families, and introduces the Nurse and Benvolio. Bandello's story was translated into French by Pierre Boaistuau in 1559 in the second volume of his ''Histoires Tragiques''. Boaistuau adds much moralizing and sentiment, and the characters indulge in rhetorical outbursts. ''After Juliet'' is a play written by Scottish playwright Sharman Macdonald. It was commissioned for the 2000 Connections programme, in which regional youth theatre groups compete to stage short plays by established playwrights. The basic premise of the play, following on from Shakespeare's ''Romeo and Juliet'' is "What happened to the Capulets and Montagues after Romeo and Juliet died?". The setting of ''After Juliet'' is described as "Verona. Or it could be Edinburgh, Dublin, Birmingham, New York City, or Liverpool. It could be 1500, 1900, 2000, or 3000". Rosaline
Rosaline () is a fictional character mentioned in William Shakespeare's tragedy ''Romeo and Juliet''. A Capulet, she is the cousin of Juliet, niece of Lord Capulet, and Romeo's original romantic interest. Although an unseen character, her role is important: at the beginning of the play, Romeo's unrequited love for Rosaline leads him to try to catch a glimpse of her at a gathering hosted by the Capulets, during which he spots Juliet and falls in love at first sight with her, leading to all subsequent events in the story. Romeo Montague () is the male protagonist of William Shakespeare's tragedy ''Romeo and Juliet''.
