Bengtskär
Bengtskär is a Finnish island southwest of Hanko, and part of the municipality of Kimitoön. This rocky island can be reached by ferry from the village of Kasnäs. Bengtskär Lighthouse
Bengtskär Lighthouse is located in the Archipelago Sea about 25 kilometers south west of Hanko, Finland. The lighthouse was built in 1906 on the Bengtskär skerry where it rises 52 meters above sea level and is the highest one in the Nordic countries. The lighthouse had been planned for some time, but after the steamer '' s/s Helsingfors '' ran aground on New Year's Day in 1905 in the vicinity en route from Lübeck to Helsinki resulting in the death of two crew members and several others trapped on board, the project gained urgency and was completed during the following year. Soviet troops stationed in Hanko during the Continuation War, disturbed by a Finnish observation post in the light house tried to blow up and destroy the lighthouse during the Battle of Bengtskär in 1941. Battle Of Bengtskär
The Battle of Bengtskär was an amphibious landing action fought between Finnish and Soviet forces on 26 July 1941 during the Continuation War. Background As a result of the Moscow Peace Treaty, Finland lost the city and port of Hanko to the Soviet Union. The port was used as a base by the Soviet Baltic Fleet from which they could dominate the Gulf of Finland. When the Continuation War broke out in 1941, Finnish forces besieged Hanko. The port in Hanko was within range of the heavy guns at Örö fortress, but a forward observation post was needed to direct their fire. The first forward observation post was set up on islet Morgonland, east of Bengtskär. This post was attacked and overrun by a Soviet amphibious assault on 16 July. After this, a new observation post was set up at Bengtskär, which was reinforced by a platoon of Finnish marines under the command of Lieutenant Fred Luther. Kimitoön (; ; ) is a municipality and island of Finland. It was created on 1 January 2009, when the municipalities of Dragsfjärd, Kimito and Västanfjärd were consolidated into a single municipality.
