Belén High School (BHS) is a public high school located in Belen, Valencia County, New Mexico. Part of Belén Consolidated Schools, it was established in 1916 as the first public high school in Valencia County. Attendance zone Within Valencia County, in addition to the vast majority of Belen, the district (and therefore the school's attendance boundary) includes the municipality of Rio Communities and the census-designated places of Adelino, Casa Colorada, Jarales, Madrone, Pueblitos, and Sausal. It also includes about half of Tome, and portions of Las Maravillas and Los Chavez. The district also includes a section of Socorro County, where it includes Abeytas, La Joya, Las Nutrias, and Veguita. Athletics Until 2014, all of Belen's varsity sports teams competed in Class 4A of the NMAA's District 6. Española Valley High School (EVHS) is a Title-1 Public school (government funded), public senior high school of the Española Public Schools District, located in Española, New Mexico. The Pit (arena)
The Pit is an indoor arena in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serving primarily as the home venue of the University of New Mexico Lobos basketball teams. The facility opened in 1966 as University Arena but gained the nickname "The Pit" due to its innovative subterranean design, with its playing floor below street level. The arena is located on the UNM South Campus and has a seating capacity of 15,411 for basketball and up to 13,480 for concerts, with 40 luxury suites and 365 club seats. Socorro County () is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 16,595. The county seat is Socorro. The county was formed in 1852 as one of the original nine counties of New Mexico Territory. Socorro was originally the name given to a Native American village (''see'': Puebloan peoples) by Don Juan de Oñate in 1598. Los Chavez is a census-designated place (CDP) in Valencia County, New Mexico. The population was 5,033 at the time of the 2000 census. It is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The settlement of Los Chávez, on the west bank of the Río Grande, dates to a 1738 grant to Nicolás Durán y Chávez from Atrisco. In 1790, it consisted of six plazas (Julyan 1996:78; Espinosa and Chávez 1967:41- 43). It was included in the 1802 census (Olmsted 1981:139-140). In the autumn of 1847, a unit of the U.S. Army traveled south along the west bank of the Río Grande. Philip Gooch Ferguson reported that “the road most generally traveled” was on the east bank, but the west side of the river was better for water.
