Belvédère (Petit Trianon)
The Belvédère du Petit Trianon, or Pavillon du Rocher, is a neoclassical garden built by Richard Mique between 1778 and 1781 for the French queen Marie Antoinette, Marie-Antoinette within the on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles, Château de Versailles. A small octagonal pavilion, designed by the Queen's architect, is one of the features of the new garden of the Petit Trianon and serves as a music salon. It is flanked by an artificial rock from which a waterfall cascades and is surrounded by miniature mountains that form an alpine garden. It is guarded by eight stone Sphinx, sphinxes sculpted by Joseph Deschamps. Deschamps was also responsible for decorating the eight facades, whose bas-reliefs allegorize the four seasons and whose pediments are decorated with attributes of hunting and gardening. Richard Mique () (18 September 1728 – 8 July 1794) was a Neoclassical architecture, Neoclassical French architect born in Lorraine. He is most remembered for his picturesque hamlet, the hameau de la Reine — not particularly characteristic of his working style — built for Marie Antoinette, Marie Antoinette, Queen of France and Navarre in the Petit Trianon gardens within the estate of the Palace of Versailles. Biography Richard Mique was born in Nancy, France, Nancy as the son of Simon Mique, an architect and entrepreneur of Lunéville and grandson of Pierre Mique, also an architect. Following their example, he became an architect in the service of Stanisław Leszczyński, the deposed King of Poland and father of Marie Leszczyńska, the wife of Louis XV. Following the death of Emmanuel Héré de Corny, Mique participated as ''premier archite''cte in Stanisław's grand plans for reordering and embellishing Nancy, his capital as Duke of Lorraine.
