Bellu Cemetery
Șerban Vodă Cemetery (commonly known as Bellu Cemetery) is the largest and most famous cemetery in Bucharest, Romania. It is located on a plot of land donated to the local administration by Baron Barbu Bellu. It has been in use since 1858. The cemetery covers and it is a cultural attraction in Bucharest. Hours The cemetery is open every day from 8:30 AM to 8 PM. On public holidays the visiting hours may differ. Constantin Bălăceanu-Stolnici
Constantin Bălăceanu-Stolnici (6 July 1923 – 20 August 2023) was a Romanian neurologist. Biography Constantin Bălăceanu-Stolnici was born in Bucharest, a descendant of an old boyar family. He studied at the Ion C. Brătianu High School in Pitești, graduating in 1941. He then enrolled at the University of Bucharest in the Faculty of Medicine, obtaining the title of Doctor of Medicine with his thesis ''Considerații asupra complexului cerebro-dentro-olivar'', written under the direction of in 1948. He practiced medicine at several hospitals in Bucharest, including (1952–1957), Ioan Cantacuzino (1957–1965), and Gheorghe Marinescu (1965–1970). From 1974 to 1993, he worked at the Ana Aslan National Institute of Geriatric and Gerontology. Beginning in 1974, he collaborated as an informant of the Securitate secret police of the communist regime. Initially reported by the press, this was confirmed by and by Bălăceanu-Stolnici himself. Ioan Alexandru Brătescu-Voinești
Ioan Alexandru Brătescu-Voinești (January 1, 1868 – December 14, 1946) was a Romanian short story writer and politician. The scion of a minor aristocratic family from Târgoviște, he studied law and, as a young man, drew close to the ''Junimea'' circle and its patron Titu Maiorescu. He began publishing fiction as an adolescent, and put out his first book of stories in 1903; his work centered on the fading provincial milieu dominated by old class structures. Meanwhile, after a break with Maiorescu, he drew toward ''Viața Românească'' and Garabet Ibrăileanu. In 1907, Brătescu-Voinești entered the Romanian parliament, where he would serve for over three decades while his written output declined. In his later years, he became an outspoken anti-Semite and fascist, a stance that, following his country's defeat in World War II, gave way to anti-communism near the end of his life. Dimitrie Brândză
Dimitrie Brândză (; October 22, 1846–August 15, 1895) was a Romanian botanist. He founded the Botanical Garden of Bucharest, which is now named in his honor. Brândză was born in Viișoara, Botoșani County. After studying at the Academia Mihăileană in Iași, he earned a Ph.D. from the University of Paris in 1869. He was a professor at the University of Iași and the University of Bucharest. In 1879 he was elected titular member of the Romanian Academy. Emil Botta
Emil Botta (; 15 September 1911 – 24 July 1977) was a Romanian actor, poet and prose writer, the younger brother of poet-essayist Dan Botta. Though born in Western Moldavia, the two boys were raised by their Corsican mother in Muscel County; as a teenager, Emil rebelled against his upbringing and ran away to Bucharest. Upon arriving there, he embraced a bohemian lifestyle that clashed with Dan's academic success; he took small jobs, had samples of his poetry and film criticism published, and, upon graduating from the Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, began a short career in boulevard comedies. As an opinion leader in the early 1930s, he rallied with the avant-garde's struggle against the "old folks", forming an anti-establishment club called "Ship of Failures". Corneliu Bogdan
Corneliu Bogdan (born Grumberg, 1921 – 2 January 1990) was a Romanian diplomat, who was Romania's ambassador to the United States between 1967 and 1976. He was born in Moșoaia, Argeș County. In his youth he was one of the leaders of the Romanian National Students' Union. In 1989 he was a visiting scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He was a minister of state at the post-revolutionary Ministry of Foreign Affairs (28 December 1989 to 2 January 1990). Ion Besoiu
Ion Besoiu (; 11 March 1931 – 18 January 2017) was a Romanian actor. Biography He was born in Sibiu in 1931 and graduated the city's Theater and Music Academy. After making his debut in 1957, he played for 16 years at the Radu Stanca National Theatre in Sibiu. He then moved to Bucharest, where he played at the Bulandra Theatre. He later served for 12 years as director of this well-known theatre. Besoiu appeared in some of the most important Romanian films from the Communist period: "Furtuna", "Neamul Șoimăreștilor", "Haiducii", "Răscoala", "Mihai Viteazul", "Ciprian Porumbescu", "Păcală", "Blestemul pământului, blestemul iubirii", "Ultima noapte de dragoste", "Lumini și umbre", "Ce neagră e mama", and "Toate pânzele sus!". Carol Benesch
Carol Benesch (January 9, 1822, Jägerndorf, Austro-Hungarian Empire, today Krnov, Czech RepublicOctober 30, 1896, Bucharest, Romania) was a Silesian architect of Historicism and Eclecticism orientation established in the Kingdom of Romania. He was the father of Oscar Benes (1866-1925), chief architect of Bârlad. Radu Beligan (; 14 December 1918 – 20 July 2016) was a Romanian actor, director, and essayist, with an activity of over 70 years in theatre, film, television, and radio. Ion Barbu (, pen name of Dan Barbilian; 18 March 1895 –11 August 1961) was a Romanian mathematician and poet. His name is associated with the Mathematics Subject Classification number 51C05, which is a major posthumous recognition reserved only to pioneers of investigations in an area of mathematical inquiry. As a poet, he is known for his volume ''Joc secund'' ("Mirrored Play"), in which he sought to fulfill his vision of a poetry which adhered to the same virtues that he found in mathematics.
