''Bell's Life...'' was a group of newspapers produced in Australia in the mid-nineteenth century based upon the English publication ''Bell's Life in London''. Most publications lasted a short duration. The subtitles were usually ''sporting chronicle''. The Sydney and Melbourne papers were precursors of the ''Australasian Post''. Sydney In Sydney, New South Wales it was known as '' Bell's Life in Sydney and Sporting Reviewer'' and had a longer publication run of 1845 to 1872. Stories and articles from the Sydney paper were carried by other newspapers. Hobart In Tasmania, the subtitle was the more extensive ''sporting chronicle, agricultural gazette and country journal''. Bell's is a brand of blended Scotch whisky, Scotch whisky produced by Diageo in Scotland. It was originally produced by Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd and is one of the best selling whiskies in the UK, only slightly behind The Famous Grouse which is the best selling Scotch whisky on the island. History The Bell's producer Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd was founded in 1798. In 1851, Arthur Bell (1825–1900) began to blend various single malts together to create a more consistent Blended whiskey, blended whisky. Arthur Bell was the first known whisky manufacturer to appoint a London agent, by at least 1863. Bell's two sons joined the business in partnership in 1895. ''Bell's Life in London, and Sporting Chronicle'' was a British weekly sporting paper published as a pink broadsheet between 1822 and 1886. History ''Bell's Life'' was founded by Robert Bell, a London printer-publisher. Bell sold it to William Innell Clement, owner of ''The Observer'', in 1824 or 1825, and the paper swallowed up a competitor, '' Pierce Egan's Life in London and Sporting Guide''. From 1824 to 1852 it was edited by Vincent George Dowling, "during which time ''Bell's Life'' became Britain's leading sporting newspaper, without which no gentleman's Sunday was quite complete". Dowling's son, Frank Lewis Dowling, effectively edited the paper during the last year of his father's life, and succeeded him as editor from 1852 to 1867. ''Bell's Life in Sydney and Sporting Reviewer'', also published as ''Bell’s Life in Sydney and Sporting Chronicle'', was a weekly English language newspaper published in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia between 1845 and 1870. History The newspaper was first published on 4 January 1845 by Thomas Revel Johnson. He took on a business partner, George Ferrers Pickering, in 1847.
