Beijing Conference
The Fourth World Conference on Women: Action for Equality, Development and Peace was the name given for a conference convened by the United Nations during 4–15 September 1995 in Beijing, China. At this conference, governments from around the world agreed on a comprehensive plan to achieve global legal equality, known as the Beijing Platform for Action. Background The founding United Nations charter (1945) included a provision for equality between men and women ( chapter III, article 8). Subsequently, from 1945 to 1975 various female officials within the United Nations and leaders of women's movements on the global stage attempted to turn these principles into action. The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution ( resolution 3010) that 1975 should be International Women's Year. Gertrude Mongella
Gertrude Ibengwe Mongella ( Makanza; born 13 September 1945) is a Tanzanian politician who was the first president of the Pan-African Parliament and was president of the African Union Commission from 2003 to 2008. Early life and work Mongella was born in 1945 on Ukerewe Island in modern-day Ukerewe District of Mwanza Region. In 1970, Mongella graduated from the University of East Africa in Dar es Salaam. For four years she was a tutor at Dar es Salaam Teachers Training College. In 1974, she became curriculum developer for the Dar es Salaam Institutes of Education, which she did until 1978. From 1977 to 1992, Mongella was a Member of the Central Committee and National Executive Committee of the CCM party. In the early 1960s, an interest in women and their connection with the environment was sparked largely by Ester Boserup's book ''Woman's Role in Economic Development''. Beverley Palesa Ditsie
Beverley Palesa Ditsie (born 1971) is a South African lesbian activist, artist, and filmmaker. Ditsie is one of the founders of the gay rights organization Gay and Lesbian Organization of Witwatersrand. In speaking about the importance of considering LGBT rights in the context of human rights at the 4th UN World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, she became the first openly lesbian woman to do. It was also the first time that the United Nations was addressed about LGBT issues, with Ditsie saying, “if the world conference on women is to address the concerns of all women, it must similarly recognise that discrimination based on sexual orientation is a violation of basic human rights”.
