Beck's PGA Championship
The South African PGA Championship is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on the Sunshine Tour. It has most recently been played in September, with a prize fund of . It is currently held at St Francis Links in St Francis Bay. History The current South African PGA Championship was founded in 1965, largely thanks to Gary Player and Brian Henning. The inaugural event was held in February 1965 and was won by Harold Henning who beat Player by 3 strokes. New sponsors in 1972 gave the championship a home at The Wanderers Golf Club where it remained until 1995, when it became the first tournament in South Africa to be co-sanctioned by the European Tour. The following year Alfred Dunhill took over from Lexington as title sponsors, breaking a 23-year association with the PGA. St Francis Bay
St Francis Bay () is a holiday town in Sarah Baartman District Municipality in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, roughly one hour’s drive from Gqeberha. History Early History The town's earliest European history of the area can be traced back to 1488 when Bartolomeu Dias named the bay ''Golfo dos Pastores'', although the bay was also known as ''Golfo dos Vaqueiros''. Darren Fichardt
Darren Clive Fichardt (born 13 May 1975) is a South African professional golfer who plays on both the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour. Early life Fichardt was born in Pretoria and grew up in Centurion, Gauteng. He attended Sutherland High School from 1988 to 1993, where his talent for golf was nurtured. Professional career Fichardt turned professional in 1994 and he won the Southern Africa Tour (now the Sunshine Tour) Order of Merit in 1999/2000 and 2003/04. He partnered Retief Goosen in South Africa's WGC-World Cup team in 2000. Fichardt has played on the European Tour since 2001 and has won five European Tour events. Dean Burmester (born 2 June 1989) is a South African professional golfer who plays in the LIV Golf League, as well as having status on the European Tour and Sunshine Tour. He formerly played on the PGA Tour. Early life Burmester was born in Mutare, Zimbabwe but represents South Africa in golf. The 2021–22 Sunshine Tour was the 51st season of the Sunshine Tour (formerly the Southern Africa Tour), the main professional golf tour in South Africa since it was formed in 1971. In-season changes In January 2021, the schedule was again disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic as several tournaments scheduled for early in the year were postponed by a month or more, with the season restarting in March. Among the tournaments affected were three co-sanctioned events with the Challenge Tour. European Tour partnership The season marked the start of a partnership between the Sunshine Tour and the European Tour. Casey Jarvis (born 28 July 2003) is a South African professional golfer who plays on the European Tour and Sunshine Tour. In 2023, he shot a 59 at the Stella Artois Players Championship and became Sunshine Tour Rookie of the Year before winning the Euram Bank Open in Austria. Early life and amateur career Jarvis was born and grew up in Boksburg, South Africa. He had a successful amateur career and was on the national squad. George Coetzee
George William Coetzee (born 18 July 1986) is a South African professional golfer. He has won five tournaments on the European Tour and 14 on the Sunshine Tour, where he has also topped the Order of Merit on two occasions. Early life Coetzee was born in Pretoria and matriculated from the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool in 2004.
