Beatriz Santos Arrascaeta
Beatriz Santos Arrascaeta (born January 20, 1947) is a Uruguayan writer, educator, singer and activist of African descent. She was born in Montevideo, growing up in the Buceo barrio, and is the niece of poet Juan Julio Arrascaeta. After completing high school, she first worked as a housekeeper. In 1977, she began working in children's theatre. Later, she performed musical theatre with New York director Ellen Stewart and then performed candombe with the theatre group Odin Teatret. After taking part in a workshop on Black America in 1980, she began to lecture on the culture and history of the black community in Uruguay. During the 1980s, she produced a number of radio shows about Afro-Uruguayan culture. She was elected to the Uruguayan Committee against Apartheid and, in 1986, she was named cultural exchange coordinator between Brazil and Uruguay. Teresa Porzecanski Cohen (born May 5th 1945) is a Uruguayan anthropologist, writer and academic. Biography Porzecanski Cohen was born and raised in Montevideo to a Jewish family. Her father was an Ashkenazi from Liepāja, Latvia and her mother, a Sephardic Jews, Sephardic from Syria. She graduated from the University of the Republic (Uruguay), University of the Republic with a degree in social work. Her works have included a focus on the History of the Jews in Uruguay, Jewish communities of Uruguay, Afro-Uruguayans, afrodescendant minorities, as well as prejudice and ethnic issues. She has been is a professor and academic at the Catholic University of Uruguay, the Latin American Center for Human Economy and the University of the Republic (Uruguay), University of the Republic. Odin Teatret
Odin Teatret is an avant-garde theatre group based in Holstebro, Denmark. It was founded by Italian theatre director and investigator Eugenio Barba in 1964. Candombe
''Candombe'' is a style of music and dance that originated in Uruguay among the descendants of liberated African slaves. In 2009, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed ''candombe'' in its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. To a lesser extent, ''candombe'' is practiced in Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. In Argentina, it can be found in Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Paraná, and Corrientes. In Paraguay, this tradition continues in Camba Cuá and in Fernando de la Mora near Asunción. In Brazil, ''candombe'' retains its religious character and can be found in the states of Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul. Ellen Stewart
Ellen Stewart (November 7, 1919 – January 13, 2011) was an American theatre director and Theatrical producer, producer and the founder of La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. During the 1950s, she worked as a fashion designer for Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor, and Henri Bendel. Early life Ellen Stewart was born in either Chicago, Illinois, or Alexandria, Louisiana. This uncertainty stems from Stewart's reticence to reveal details of her early life. As an observer wrote, "Her history is somewhat difficult to sort out—indeed it takes on a legendary quality—since on different occasions she gives different versions of the same stories."
