Bayahíbe
Bayahíbe is a town in the Dominican Republic, located about east of La Romana, Dominican Republic, La Romana on the shore of the Caribbean Sea with 5,618 inhabitants (2022). Founded as a fishing village in 1874 by Juan Brito and his family, who came from Puerto Rico, the town is now a tourist destination. Etymology Bayahíbe is an indigenous word. Its meaning is not known for sure, but there are many names that include the Taíno language, Tainos word "Baya." "Baya" is the name given to a bivalve mollusk, like clams that are glued to the rocks or roots of mangrove trees. "Jib" (or "hib") is the name of a sieve manufactured from sticks used to sift cassava flour. Tourism Bayahíbe Beach, a public beach, is located less than a mile from the town center, and Dominicus Beach is in about three miles' distance. Saona Island
Saona Island () is a tropical island located off off the south-east coast in Dominican Republic's La Altagracia province. It is a government-protected nature reserve and is part of Cotubanamá National Park. There are two permanent settlements, the town of Mano Juan and the naval base at Catuano. The island is a popular tourist destination in the Dominican Republic. Etymology Granberry and Vescelius (2004) suggest a Macoris etymology for the name ''Saona'', comparing it with ''sa-ona'' 'full of bats' in the purportedly related Warao language of the Orinoco Delta. Pereskia Quisqueyana
''Leuenbergeria quisqueyana'', known as the Bayahibe rose, is a species of cactus that is endemic to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, in the Dominican Republic. Taxonomy The species was discovered by the French botanist Henri Alain Liogier in 1977 as ''Pereskia quisqueyana'', the description being published in 1980. He named it ''quisqueyana'', in honor of the Dominican Republic, which is also referred to natively as '' Quisqueya''. Description ''Leuenbergeria quisqueyana'' is a dioecious cactus that resembles a shrub and reaches up to in height. Its trunk is surrounded by groups of spines which erupt in bunches. Audrey Mestre
Audrey Mestre (11 August 1974 – 12 October 2002) was a French world record-setting freediver. Early life Mestre was born in Saint-Denis, Seine-Saint-Denis, to a family of snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts. She began swimming when she was a baby. She became a seasoned scuba diver by age thirteen but did not get full certification until her sixteenth birthday due to French law. She was still in her teens when her family moved to Mexico City and, fluent in the Spanish language, she eventually studied marine biology at a university in La Paz, Mexico. La Altagracia Province
La Altagracia () is a province located in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic. It is the only region that borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It is divided into two municipalities and its capital is the beach city of Punta Cana. The province was part of the old La Altagracia Province, which split into two, La Altagracia Province and La Romana Province, on February 27, 1961.
