Batumi (; ka, ბათუმი ), historically Batum or Batoum, is the List of cities and towns in Georgia (country), second-largest city of Georgia (country), Georgia and the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, located on the coast of the Black Sea in Georgia's southwest, north of the Georgia-Turkey border, border with Turkey. Batumi Seaport
The Batumi Seaport ( ka, ბათუმის საზღვაო პორტი, tr) is a Georgian seaport. It is the largest container, ferry and general cargo seaport in Georgia. Located in the city of Batumi, on the south-east coast of the Black Sea. The port is also used as a major transit port for oil refining in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Batumi Port has the ability to meet customer requirements for various cargo, ships and passengers. The Batumi Municipal Assembly ( ka, ბათუმის საკრებულო, tr) is a representative body in the city of Batumi, Georgia. Currently consisting of 35 members; of these, 28 are proportional representatives and 7 are elected through single-member districts, representing their constituencies. During the 1990s, the city council did not function as a self-governing body and decisions in the city were made individually by authorities. At this period, the leader of the autonomous republic was Aslan Abashidze, whose authoritarian ruling ended after the Adjara’s Rose Revolution, on May 6, 2004. Batumi Botanical Garden
The Batumi Botanical Garden ( ka, ბათუმის ბოტანიკური ბაღი) is a area of land north of the city of Batumi, capital of Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Georgia. Located at the place called Mtsvane Kontskhi ("The Green Cape") on the Black Sea shore, it is one of the largest botanical gardens in the former Soviet Union. History The Batumi Botanical Garden was started by the Russian botanist Andrey Nikolayevich Krasnov (1862–1914), brother of General Pyotr Krasnov, in the 1880s and officially opened on November 3, 1912. He was aided by two skilled gardeners and decorators: the French D’Alphonse and the Georgian Yason Gordeziani. Krasnov died in 1914 and was interred at the garden which still houses his grave and statue. Adjar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic
The Adjarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Adjarian ASSR or Adzhar ASSR; ka, აჭარის ავტონომიური საბჭოთა სოციალისტური რესპუბლიკა, tr; ) was an autonomous republic of the Soviet Union within the Georgian SSR, established on 16 July 1921.
