Battleboro is a neighborhood of the city of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Rocky Mount in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, Edgecombe and Nash County, North Carolina, Nash counties of North Carolina, United States. History In 1835 Joseph S. Battle established Battle's Camp along the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad. The settlement was initially located entirely in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, but in 1871 the county line was altered to run along the railroad and Battle's Camp straddled both Edgecombe and Nash County, North Carolina, Nash counties. In 1873 the community was incorporated as the town of Battleboro. By 1900 the town had 229 residents. Around that time the community had a strong economy and hosted an oil mill, sawmill, gristmill, ice plant, music shop, and barbershop. Two years later the business district was destroyed in a fire, but it was later rebuilt. By 1990 the town had grown to include 447 residents. Mae Mercer
Mae Mercer (June 12, 1932 – October 29, 2008) was an American blues singer and actress. She was born in the Temperance Hall community of Edgecombe County. Mercer lived in North Carolina through age 15. She spent eight years in the 1960s singing in a blues bar in Paris, the Blues Club, owned by publisher Maurice Girodias and touring Europe. She eventually came to own and operate a blues club in the city. Mercer returned to the United States in the early 1970s to begin a career as an actress in films and television. Clinton Wesley Battle (September 27, 1849 – ?) was an American politician in North Carolina during and after the Reconstruction era. He represented Edgecombe County in the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1879 and 1881. Early life Clinton Wesley Battle was born on September 27, 1849 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He was enslaved at birth. He was educated at Shaw University in Raleigh. He married Siddie Ann Bryant on April 6, 1876, and had a child with her. Career From 1874 to 1876 Battle served as a trustee of Swift Creek Township in Edgecombe and then served two years as a county commissioner before being elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives as a Republican in 1878. He and William W. Watson Sr. were both "colored" Republican nominees for North Carolina House seats and served together in 1881.
