Battery B, 1st Illinois Light Artillery Regiment was an artillery battery that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service Battery B was mustered into service at Chicago, Illinois on May 2, 1861 for three months' service. The battery was re-mustered for three years service at Cairo, Illinois on July 16, 1861. The battery was mustered out on July 23, 1864 at Chicago, Illinois. Veterans and recruits were transferred to Battery A, 1st Illinois Light Artillery Regiment. The battery was recreated in March, 1865 by the redesignation of Bridges' Battery Illinois Light Artillery. Total strength and casualties The battery suffered 9 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 1 officer and 17 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 27 fatalities. Artillery consists of ranged weapons that launch munitions far beyond the range and power of infantry firearms. Early artillery development focused on the ability to breach defensive walls and fortifications during sieges, and led to heavy, fairly immobile siege engines. As technology improved, lighter, more mobile field artillery cannons were developed for battlefield use. This development continues today; modern self-propelled artillery vehicles are highly mobile weapons of great versatility generally providing the largest share of an army's total firepower. During the American Civil War, the state of Illinois was a major source of troops for the Union Army (particularly for those armies serving in the Western Theater of the Civil War), and of military supplies, food, and clothing. Situated near major rivers and railroads, Illinois became a major jumping-off place early in the war for Ulysses S. Grant's efforts to seize control of the Mississippi and Tennessee rivers. Statewide, public support for the Union was high despite Copperhead sentiment. The state was energetically led throughout the war by Governor Richard Yates. Samuel Eddy Barrett
Samuel Eddy Barrett (1834–1912) was a Chicago industrialist and major in the American Civil War. Biography Samuel Eddy Barrett was born on May 16, 1834 in Cambridgeport, Massachusetts. He moved to Chicago, Illinois and in 1857 founded the manufacturing firm Barrett, Powell & Arnold, which later became S.E. Barrett Manufacturing Company. He volunteered in the 1st Illinois Artillery Regiment, commanding its Company B. He was promoted to major in 1863. Barrett married Alice D. Brush on May 20, 1868, and had six children. He worked with S.E. Barrett Manufacturing Company (later Barrett Manufacturing Company) until his death, while simultaneously acting as the head of the American Coal Products Company starting in 1903. Barrett died in Baltimore on December 30, 1912. Bridges' Battery Illinois Light Artillery was an artillery battery from Illinois that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Organized on 17 June 1861 as Company G, 19th Illinois Infantry Regiment, it was detached as an independent artillery battery on 14 January 1863. The battery fought in the Tullahoma campaign, at the battles of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, and in the Knoxville campaign in 1863. Bridges' Battery participated in the Atlanta campaign in 1864, fighting at Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Adairsville, Pickett's Mill, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Atlanta, and Jonesboro. The unit fought at Franklin and Nashville shortly before it was renamed Battery B, 1st Illinois Light Artillery Regiment on 21 December 1864.
