Batavia, NY
Batavia is a city in and the county seat of Genesee County, New York, United States. It is located near the center of the county, surrounded by the Town of Batavia, which is a separate municipality. Batavia's population, as of the 2020 census, was 15,600. It is considered to be part of the Rochester–Batavia–Seneca Falls combined statistical area. The name ''Batavia'' is Latin for the Betuwe region of the Netherlands, and honors early Dutch land developers. In 2006, a national magazine, ''Site Selection'', ranked Batavia third among the nation's micropolitans, based on economic development. The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) passes north of the city. Genesee County Airport (GVQ) is also north of the city. The city hosts the Batavia Muckdogs baseball team, of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, at Dwyer Stadium, (299 Bank Street). Genesee County Courthouse
The Genesee County Courthouse is located at the intersection of Main (New York state routes 5 and 33) and Ellicott ( NY 63) streets in Batavia, New York, United States. It is a three-story Greek Revival limestone structure built in the 1840s. It replaced an older timber frame courthouse near the current site, which served what was at that time the entire Holland Purchase, the vast tract that is today Western New York. At the time the courthouse was built, the county had been reduced to its current size by the creation of 10 other counties from the purchase. Construction materials were all sourced locally. Later it underwent some minor renovations. While Genesee County has subsequently built additional court facilities nearby where most judicial activity takes place, it is still used for some court purposes as well as offices for the county manager, attorney and the meeting place of the county legislature. Batavia Muckdogs
The Batavia Muckdogs are a collegiate summer baseball team in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL). They are located in Batavia, a city in Genesee County, New York, United States. Their home field is Dwyer Stadium in the city of Batavia, built after the 1996 season to replace the original Dwyer Stadium (formerly State Street Park, MacArthur Stadium) that opened July 27, 1938 as home to the Batavia Bees, a semi-pro team in the Genesee County League. Off and on from 1939 to 2020, they were members of Minor League Baseball's New York–Penn League (NYPL). It is located two nautical miles (4 km) north of the central business district of Batavia, a city located within the Town of Batavia. Betuwe (), also known in English as Batavia ( ), is a historical and geographical region in the Netherlands, forming large fertile islands in the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta, river delta formed by the waters of the Rhine (Dutch: ''Rijn'') and Meuse (Dutch: ''Maas'') rivers. During the Roman Empire, it was an important frontier region and source of imperial soldiers. Its name is possibly pre-Roman.
