Batanes
Batanes, officially the Province of Batanes (; Ilocano: ''Probinsia ti Batanes''; , ), is an archipelagic province in the Philippines, administratively part of the Cagayan Valley region. It is the northernmost province in the Philippines, and the smallest, both in population and land area. The capital is Basco, located on the island of Batan, and is also the most populous municipality in the province. The island group is located approximately north of the Luzon mainland and about south of Taiwan ( Pingtung County). Batanes is separated from the Babuyan Islands of Cagayan Province by the Balintang Channel, and from Taiwan by the Bashi Channel. Basco, officially the Municipality of Basco (; Ilocano: ''Ili ti Basco''; ), is a municipality and capital of the province of Batanes, Philippines. In the 2020 census, it had a population of 9,517 people. Basco is the most populous town in Batanes and is located on Batan Island, the second largest among the ''Batanes Islands'', the northernmost group of islands of the Philippines. Itbayat, officially the Municipality of Itbayat, (; Ilocano: ''Ili ti Itbayat''; ), is a municipality in the province of Batanes, Philippines. In the 2020 census, it had a population of 3,128 people. The Batanes Provincial Board is the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial legislature) of the Philippine province of Batanes. The members are elected via plurality-at-large voting: the province is divided into two districts, each sending three members to the provincial board; the electorate votes for three members, with the three candidates with the highest number of votes being elected. Ivatan Language
The Ivatan language, also known as Chirin nu Ivatan ("language of the Ivatan people"), is an Austronesian language spoken in the Batanes Islands of the Philippines. Although the islands are closer to Taiwan than to Luzon, it is not one of the Formosan languages. Ivatan is one of the Batanic languages, which are perhaps a primary branch of the Malayo-Polynesian family of Austronesian languages. The language of Babuyan Island (Ibatan) is sometimes classified as a dialect of the Ivatan language. Most of the Babuyan population moved to Batan Island and to Luzon mainland during the Spanish colonial period.
