Bataka Squad
Bataka Squad (formerly Bataka Underground) is a Ugandan hip hop group. The group was formed by Babaluku (a.k.a. Sniperous MC), Saba Saba aka Krazy Native and Big Poppa Momo MC. Founded in the mid-1990s, it is one of the earliest hip hop groups in Uganda. The group was later joined by Newton now in L.A, La raat now in London, UK, Lyrical G who later joined Urban Thugs and eventually went solo. Chagga who left and joined Chameleone as a background vocalist. Then came Shillingz who was known for his tongue twisting and now based in Toronto, Canada. Then came "Farious" a Burundian born who also returned home. Currently, Saba Saba, Babaluku and new member Tshila are holding it down as Bataka Squad. The word 'Bataka' means natives. Members wanted people to understand their background. The three founders were born and raised in Kampala, Uganda. The term Underground was meant to imply simply "Not Commercial". Babaluku
Babaluku, born Silas Babaluku Balabyekkubo, is a Ugandan rapper, musician, producer, community youth activist and social entrepreneur who raps in Luganda. He is a member of the Bataka Squad. He is the founder of "the Bavubuka Foundation which equips the youth with leadership skills". He is one of the pioneers of "Lugaflow" which is rap music in Luganda. He was featured in a 2008 documentary "Diamonds in the Rough: A Ugandan Hip-hop Revolution" that covered his journey from his crew’s early days of performing in Uganda to performing in at festivals in the United States of America. Saba Saba
Saba Saba, also known as Krazy Native (born Alex Kirya, 5 August 1977) is a rapper and social activist from Uganda. Saba Saba began his hip hop career in 1993 with the group Bataka Squad. Saba Saba is now a solo artist, but remains a member of Bataka Squad. Saba Saba appeared in the film ''Diamonds in the Rough''. He currently lives in Kampala, Uganda and Los Angeles and continues to write, produce and perform. Chameleone
Joseph Mayanja (born 30 April 1979), better known by the stage name Jose Chameleone, is a Ugandan AfroBeat artist and musician. He sings in Luganda, English, and Swahili. Early life and education Joseph Mayanja was born on 30 April 1979 to Gerald and Prossy Mayanja in Kampala district, as the fourth of eight children. He went to Nakasero Primary School, Mengo Senior Secondary School, Kawempe Muslim Senior Secondary School, Katikamu Seventh Day Adventist Senior Secondary School, and Progressive Senior Secondary School. Tshila
Tshila (born June 10, 1983) is a Ugandan singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. Background Tshila was born in Kampala, Uganda. She wasn't raised in a musical family and didn't study music at any of the schools she attended as a young student in Uganda. She completed her degree in software engineering in the United States of America, then returned to Uganda, where she began to develop her musical talent. Musical career Back in Uganda, she began making music as part of the groundbreaking hip-hop group Bataka Squad. Trinity International Hip Hop Festival
The Trinity International Hip Hop Festival is a free music festival that brings together Hip Hop artists from around the world. It has been held annually at Trinity College in Hartford, CT since 2006. "The festival was designed to promote international understanding and community development through hip-hop." It is "the first and only free global Hip-Hop festival dedicated to educating and exposing the public to Hip-Hop from around the world."
