The women's tournament in basketball at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul began on 19 September and ended on 29 September. The United States won their second gold medal (and second consecutive gold medal) after defeating Yugoslavia, 77–70, in the gold medal match. Competition schedule Qualification A National Olympic Committee, NOC could enter one women's team with 12 players. Automatic qualifications were granted to the host country and the winners from the previous edition. The remaining teams were decided by a tournament held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where the top six teams earned a spot. Squads Each NOC was limited to one team per tournament. Club Deportivo CREF is a women's basketball team based in Madrid that currently plays in the Spanish Liga Femenina de Baloncesto. History 1960–1980: CREFF Colegios Reunidos de Educación Física Femenina de Madrid was founded in 1960 by the Sección Femenina of the Movimiento Nacional, during the Francoism. Its women's basketball team dominated the early stages of the Spanish League, winning seven titles between 1964 and 1971, and representing Spain in the FIBA European Cup with few success. Back then the team was considered the Real Madrid of women's basketball, and it shared arena with Real Madrid's male basketball team. Milan Vasojević
Milan "Ciga" Vasojević ( sr-Cyrl, Милан "Цига" Васојевић; 27 December 1932 – 24 December 1996) was a Serbian professional basketball coach and administrator. He led the national team of Yugoslavia during the greatest successes of women's basketball. Coaching career ;Women's basketball Vasojević coached two Belgrade-based teams Radnički and Crvena zvezda during the 1960s, winning three Yugoslavian League championships as well as two Yugoslav Cup titles in 1960 and 1962. After leaving Crvena zvezda, Vasojević moved to Italy to coach Recoaro Vicenza from 1967 to 1970, leading the team to two Italian League championships in 1968 and 1969. Ženski košarkaški klub Jedinstvo Piemonte is a women's basketball club from Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The club won three Yugoslav Women's Basketball League championships during the 1980s, as Jedinstvo Aida. In 1989 Jedinstvo Tuzla won the EuroLeague Women, and they played in the 1990 Ronchetti Cup final. The club's best and most famous player of all time was FIBA Hall of Fame inductee Razija Mujanović. The Yugoslavia women's national basketball team () was the women's basketball side that represented the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1943 until 1992 in international competition, and were controlled by the Basketball Federation of Yugoslavia (KSJ). The team's first major tournament appearance was at the 1954 European Championship, hosted by Yugoslavia, in which it finished fourth. The team's biggest success in the following decades were a bronze medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, and a silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The team disappeared during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, and its last major tournament appearance was at the 1991 European Championship in Israel, where they finished as runners-up losing to the Soviet Union in the final. Kay Yow
Sandra Kay Yow (March 14, 1942 – January 24, 2009) was an American basketball coach. She was the head coach of the NC State Wolfpack women's basketball team from 1975 to 2009. A member of the Naismith Hall of Fame, she had more than 700 career wins. She also coached the U.S. women's basketball team to an Olympic gold medal in 1988 despite having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. In 2000, Yow was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. In 2009, she was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame. The Penn State Lady Lions basketball team represents Pennsylvania State University and plays its home games in the Bryce Jordan Center. In 2013, the Lady Lions became just the 12th program in NCAA Division I history to reach 850 wins.
