Basketball Ireland
Basketball Ireland (BI; ) is the national governing body for the sport on the island of Ireland. Part of FIBA Europe, the European governing body, and of FIBA, the World governing body, BI is responsible for the promotion and administration of basketball throughout Ireland and for Irish international participation. The organisation was founded in 1945 as the Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland (ABAI). The name of the organisation changed from the original ABAI to the Irish Basketball Association (IBA) in 1980. BI operates as a conduit with Government Departments, particularly the Department of Transport, Arts, Tourism & Sport who have significantly funded BI in the past. BI is also the main conduit for the Irish Sports Council who provide significant funding. BI positions itself as a service centre for all levels of the game, facilitating all aspects of promoting and running the sport. Basketball
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular Basketball court, court, compete with the primary objective of #Shooting, shooting a basketball (ball), basketball (approximately in diameter) through the defender's Basket (basketball), hoop (a basket in diameter mounted high to a Backboard (basketball), backboard at each end of the court), while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop.
