The Basilan Starhorse, previously known as Basilan Viva Portmasters, is a Filipino professional basketball team based in Lamitan, Basilan. The team competes in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) as a member of the league's South Division. The team most recently played its home games at Lamitan Capitol Gym. The team began playing as the Basilan Steel in the 2018–19 MPBL season as part of the league's national expansion. In 2021, they renamed as the Basilan Peace Riders upon moving to the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup, where they won their only league championship. In 2022, the team moved leagues once again, this time to the Pilipinas Super League (PSL) before going back to the MPBL in 2025. The Basilan franchise is one of five teams based in Mindanao and the lone team based in the Bangsamoro region. The team is backed by the Starhorse Shipping Lines. Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League
The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) is a men's regional professional basketball league in the Philippines composed of 30 teams. Founded in 2017 by eight-division boxing world champion and then-Senator Manny Pacquiao, the MPBL is not intended to be a competitor to the top-flight Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), but rather to provide a gateway for local, homegrown talents to showcase their skills. The league uses a home-and-away format, similar to the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association. The MPBL started an amateur league before being granted professional status by the Games and Amusements Board. Due to Pacquiao's role in the league, it has also been referred to as Manny Pacquiao's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. The Davao Occidental Tigers (also known as Davao Occidental Tigers – Cocolife due to sponsorship reasons) are a Filipino professional basketball team based in the Davao metropolitan area and representing the province of Davao Occidental. The team competes in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League as a member of the league's South Division. The team hasn't played any home games in Davao Occidental, but has played at a variety of venues across Metro Davao. The franchise was founded as an expansion team in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) for its 2018–19 season. The Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards (shortened as NERV) are a Filipino professional basketball team based in Palayan, Nueva Ecija. The team competes in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) as a member of the league's North Division. The team plays its home games at Nueva Ecija Coliseum. The team began play as an expansion team for the 2019–20 MPBL season, though they would only begin using the ''Rice Vanguards'' moniker later on. The Mindoro Tamaraws are a Filipino professional basketball team based in the province of Oriental Mindoro. The team primarily competes in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) as a member of the league's South Division. The team splits its home games between the Sentrong Pangkabataan in Calapan and the Pola Gymnasium in Pola. The team began play during the 2019–20 season. The franchise also competed in NBL–Pilipinas as the Mindoro Tamaraws Disiplinados (stylized as Disipl-Ina-dos) during the 2021 Chairman's Cup. 2021 MPBL Invitational
The 2021 MPBL Invitational was the preseason tournament for the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League's 2022 season and the first edition of what would become the MPBL Preseason Invitational. The tournament began on December 11, 2021 and ended on December 23, 2021 when the Basilan Jumbo Plastic beat the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards in overtime, 83–80. Philip Manalang, who hit the championship-winning buzzer beater for Basilan, was adjudged as the tournament Finals MVP. All games were played at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay at 50% capacity, making it the first pro sports event in the Philippines to allow live spectators since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Roxas Vanguards were a Filipino professional basketball team based in Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte. The team last competed in the Pilipinas Super League. 2021 MPBL Finals
The 2021 MPBL finals, originally called the 2020 MPBL finals and also known as the MPBL Lakan Cup finals, was the championship series of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League's (MPBL) 2019–20 MPBL season, and the conclusion of the season's playoffs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the league held the entire series in a bubble in Subic, Zambales. In the best-of-five playoff that saw a rematch of the previous season's finals, the South Division champion Davao Occidental Tigers beat the North Division champion San Juan Knights, 3–1, as they were crowned the league's third champions. Mark Yee was also named the season's Finals MVP.
