Bascharage
Bascharage (; ; ) is a town and a former commune in south-western Luxembourg. Since 2012, it is part of the commune of Käerjeng. History Bascharage with the other towns like Linger, Hautcharage, and Pétange were owned by the "Hoheit Kerschen". The first known reference to them was on April 4, 1281, for obtaining their freedom under the law of Beamont "Freiheitsbrief nach Böhmerrecht". The freedom of Clemency probably happened in 1260. After the occupation of France (1794 – 1815), the "Hoheit Kerschen" changed in "municipalité cantonale Bascharage" with the townships of Bascharage, Clemency, Mamer, Garnich, and Dippach. This township came out in 1799 as the "Mairie de Bascharage" with the towns of Bascharage, Hautchaurage, and Linger. Their first mayor was Pierre Clemont in 1800. Käerjeng
Käerjeng () is a commune in southwestern Luxembourg, in the canton of Capellen. It lies on the border with Belgium. It has an area of 33.67 km2. The commune of Käerjeng was formed on 1 January 2012 from the former communes of Bascharage and Clemency. The law creating Käerjeng was passed on 24 May 2011. With a population of approximately 11,000, Käerjeng is the 10th most-populous commune in Luxembourg. Geography Käerjeng is located on the dividing line of the waters of the Rhine basin (Eisch) and the watershed of the Meuse (Chiers). It is bordered by the communes of Pétange, Differdange, Sanem, Dippach, Garnich and Steinfort, as well as the Belgian border to the north-west. Brasserie Nationale
Brasserie Nationale is the largest brewery in Luxembourg, based in Bascharage. They also export to Belgium, France, China, and since 2014 to the United States. They brew beer under the brand name ''Bofferding'' and since taking over in 2004 '' Battin''. The Brasserie Nationale was born in 1975 from the fusion of two breweries: The Brasserie Bofferding, founded by Jean-Baptiste Bofferding in 1842, and the Brasserie Funck-Bricher founded in 1764. Hautcharage
Hautcharage (; , ) is a small town in the commune of Käerjeng, in south-western Luxembourg. As of 2024, it had a population of 1,971. Geography Neighbouring towns include Clemency, Fingig, Hivange, Schouweiler, Bascharage and Linger. The small river ''Mierbaach,'' which rises south of the ''Boufferdenger Muer'', flows through Hautcharage. History The church of St. Denis was built in 1744 and consectrated on 15 August 1761 by the auxiliary bishop of Trier Johann Nikolaus von Hontheim. Its furnishings are of Baroque style. Sport Hautcharage's former football club FC Jeunesse Hautcharage won the 1970–71 Luxembourg Cup and qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup. Commune of Clemency was a former commune in Luxembourg. Its main city was Clemency with a population of 1832. The law creating the commune of Käerjeng was passed on 24 May 2011. On 1 January 2012 the existing communes of Clemency and Bascharage with its main city the same named Bascharage were merged into one commune named Käerjeng. Michel Wolter
Michel Wolter (born 13 September 1962 in Luxembourg City) is a Luxembourgish politician. He was the youngest-ever member of the Chamber of Deputies when elected in 1984, and served as Minister for the Interior from 1995 to 2004. He is also a businessman and a former international table tennis player. Michel Wolter grew up in Esch-sur-Alzette, the second largest city of the country. He studied economics at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne from 1981 to 1985. Wolter was an international table tennis player from 1980 to 1984. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies at the 1984 election, on the Christian Social People's Party ticket. Aged 21 at that time, he is today still the youngest ever elected member. Nicolas Joseph 'Claus' Cito (26 May 1882 – 10 October 1965) was a Luxembourgish sculptor educated at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He is most notable for having created the original Gëlle Fra war memorial, though his work can also be found at the Notre-Dame Cathedral, Luxembourg. Along with Emile Hulten and Charles Kohl, he worked on the bas-reliefs of the National Resistance Museum in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. In 1909, Cito shared the coveted Prix Grand-duc Adolphe with the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Wercollier.
