Barview, Tillamook County, Oregon
Barview is an unincorporated community in Tillamook County, Oregon, United States, named in 1884 by L. C. Smith for its exceptional view of the bar at the entrance to Tillamook Bay. Geography Barview is near two other unincorporated communities in Tillamook County, Twin Rocks and Watseco. The three communities are along the stretch of U.S. Route 101 between the cities of Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi. Life saving station The Tillamook Life Saving Station, designed by Victor Mindeleff and built in 1908, is in Barview. It was part of the United States Life-Saving Service, which provided aid to mariners in distress. The property, transferred to private ownership during World War II, is the only remaining such station in Oregon. The building and adjacent boathouse are vacant and neglected, and have sustained damage through a car crash and a leaking sewer main. Tillamook Bay
Tillamook Bay is a small inlet of the Pacific Ocean, approximately 6 mi (10 km) long and 2 mi (3 km) wide, on the northwest coast of the U.S. state of Oregon. It is located just north of Cape Meares in western Tillamook County approximately 75 mi (120 km) west of Portland. Description and history The bay is protected from the open ocean by shoals and a 3 mi (5 km) sandbar called the Bayocean Peninsula. It is surrounded closely by the Coastal Range except at its southeast end, where the town of Tillamook sits near the mouths of the Kilchis, Wilson, Trask and Tillamook rivers, which flow quickly down from the surrounding timber-producing regions of the Coastal Range to converge at the bay. Restore Oregon, formerly the Historic Preservation League of Oregon (HPLO), is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation with a mission to "Preserve, Reuse, and Pass Forward Oregon’s Historic Resources to Ensure Livable, Sustainable Communities." Yarmouth is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States, twelve miles north of the state's largest city, Portland. Garibaldi, Oregon
Garibaldi ( ) is a city in Tillamook County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 797 at the 2020 census. History The indigenous Tillamook people have lived along the Oregon coast –including the Tillamook Bay– for about 12,000 years; from Tillamook Head in the North, to Cape Foulweather in the south, and extending inland to the summit of the Oregon Coast Range. They lived in permanent cedar-plank lodges, illuminated at night with torches or by burning fish heads or whale oil. Rockaway Beach is a city in Tillamook County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,312 at the 2010 census. The city houses the Rockaway Beach Old Growth Cedar Preserve, a 46-acre wetlands preserve which opened in 2019.
