Barrabás
Barrabás are a Spanish musical group, most successful in the 1970s and 1980s when they were led by drummer and producer Fernando Arbex. The group's musical style was initially Latin rock with jazz and funk influences, and later developed into a more disco-orientated sound. History Arbex formed Barrabás in 1971 when his previous band, Alacrán, split. He and Alacrán's bass guitarist and vocalist Iñaki Egaña, Ignacio "Iñaki" Egaña were joined by several other musicians in preparation for the recording of their debut album ''Wild Safari'' released later that year. These were Philippines, Filipino guitarist brothers Ricky and Miguel Morales; Portuguese keyboard instrument, keyboard player Juan Vidal and Cuban percussionist, saxophone and flute player Tito Duarte, Ernesto "Tito" Duarte. ''¡Soltad a Barrabás!'' is the third album by the Music of Spain#Popular music in Spain, Spanish group Barrabás, released in 1974. The album was originally released as ''Release Barrabás'' or ''Hi-Jack'' in some other countries, but the modern CD release retains the Spanish title. It was the first album recorded outside their native Spain. Tito Duarte
Ernesto Duarte Hernández known as Tito Duarte (born Havana, Cuba, August 7, 1946 - died Córdoba, Spain, July 14, 2003), was a Cuban musician, instrumentalist and arranger. Artistic career Tito Duarte was the son of composer and director Ernesto Duarte Brito, who worked with artists such as Benny Moré and Celia Cruz, as well as working as a director in record companies in the middle of the 20th century. The Duartes left Cuba and settled in Madrid after Fidel Castro's revolution. His father worked for the RCA label, while he, who had already played with his father's orchestra in Cuba, revealed himself as an instrumentalist and arranger. Tito Duarte played percussions, sax, flutes, keyboards, bass, and was also an arranger for songs of various bands, such as Barrabás (founded by Fernando Arbex), and Miguel Ríos' band (''Concierto de Rock y Amor'', 1972). Wild Safari
''Wild Safari'' is a 1971 album by the Spanish group Barrabás, released outside Spain in January 1972. The album was released in some countries under the simple title ''Barrabás'', with a different sleeve design. It was also known as ''Música Caliente'' after its subtitle on the back sleeve. The tracks "Woman" and "Wild Safari" were released as singles in various countries, and "Woman" became a club hit in Europe, Canada and the USA. "Wild Safari" was used as the background music for a major scene in HBO's 2016 'Vinyl' series. Iñaki Egaña
Ignacio "Iñaki" Egaña Azpeitia (born 24 October 1948 in Portugalete, Basque Country) is a Spanish musician and songwriter, active since the late 1960s in various rock and blues groups and as a solo artist. He is primarily a bass guitar player and vocalist. Career After starting his career with Los Tañidores, releasing a single "Cerrado por balance" in 1967, Egaña passed through a number of bands including Combination Five and Los Snobs. He joined the blues rock group Los Buenos in 1968, who enjoyed a period of commercial success in their native Spain, releasing four singles. Other members included organist Rod Mayall, brother of British blues icon John Mayall. In 1970, Egaña joined two ex-members of Los Brincos, drummer Fernando Arbex and Colombian guitarist Oscar Lasprilla to form Alacrán, a Latin rock trio following a musical path similar to that of American band Santana. ''Power'' is a 1973 album by the Spanish group Barrabás. It was the first album to feature new vocalist José Luís Tejada, and drummer José María Moll, who had previously only played with the band in concerts. Tejada had replaced original singer and bassist Iñaki Egaña on vocals, with Miguel Morales moving to bass guitar. Band leader Fernando Arbex took on the role of producer. ''Prohibido'', titled Forbidden in some countries, is a 1983 music album by the Spanish group Barrabás. It was the band's ninth album, and the last for several years before a return to recording in the 1990s. With the return of former members Iñaki Egaña, Miguel Morales and Tito Duarte, it was described by AllMusic's Andy Kellman as "a very slight improvement" over the previous two albums. He praised the musicianship as "top-notch and professional", but criticised the vocals and lyrics, singling out "Sex Surprise Big Surprise" as the worst example. ''Heart of the City'' is the fourth album by the Spanish group Barrabás, released in 1975. The album charted at #149 on the ''Billboard'' 200 in the US, and was later re-released on CD in Spain as ''Check Mate''. This album was the first to feature Daniel Louis on drums, after the departure of José María Moll. "Checkmate" / "Family Size" and "Make It Easy" / "Take a Wild Ride" were released as singles. Hijack (song)
"Hi-Jack" is a 1974 r&b and funk disco based song written by Spanish musician Fernando Arbex and originally recorded by his group Barrabás for their album ''¡Soltad a Barrabás!''. While their version of the song was a huge success in their native Spain, going all the way to Number one over there, the song flopped in America, stalling at just number No. 104 on the Bubbling Under the Billboard Hot 100 Charts in July 1975. It was later a hit single for jazz flautist Herbie Mann. Herbie Mann version Mann's recording of the song featured Cissy Houston on vocals and hit number one on the US Disco Action chart for three weeks in early 1975 and made the top 30 on the R&B and pop singles charts. The song was banned on several AM radio stations because of the recent cases of hijackings in the middle East, as well as for the suggestive repeated lyric lines: "Hijack your love" and "I'm gonna steal your love". Fernando Arbex
José Fernando Arbex Miró (28 May 1941 – 5 July 2003) was an influential Spanish musician and songwriter from Madrid, who enjoyed success both with his own groups and also with other artists. While still in his teens, he was the drummer in Los Estudiantes, and in 1965 he formed the very successful pop band Los Brincos (often seen as the "Spanish Beatles") in which he also played drums. After that group split in the late 1960s, Arbex formed the progressive Latin rock trio Alacrán with Iñaki Egaña and Oscar Lasprilla, releasing an album ''Alacran'' in 1969 which has drawn comparisons with Santana. When Lasprilla left the band and moved to England, Arbex and Egaña founded the Latin disco and rock-orientated Barrabás, who went on to considerable European success throughout the 1970s. Latin Rock is a term to describe a subgenre blending traditional sounds and elements of Latin American and Hispanic Caribbean folk with rock music. However, it is widely used in the English-language media to refer any kind of rock music featuring Spanish or Portuguese vocals. This has led to controversy about the scope of the terminology. ATCO Records is an American record label founded in 1955. It is owned by Warner Music Group and operates as an imprint of Atlantic Records. After several decades of dormancy and infrequent activity under alternating Warner Music labels, the company was relaunched by Atlantic Records in early 2020.
