Barisal ( or ; , ), officially known as Barishal, is a major city that lies on the banks of the Kirtankhola river in south-central Bangladesh. It is the largest city and the administrative headquarter of both Barisal District and Barisal Division. It is one of the oldest municipalities and river ports of the country. The city was once called the Venice of the East or the Venice of Bengal. Barisal municipality was established in 1876 during the British rule in India and upgraded to City Corporation on 25 July 2002. Barisal is Bangladesh's third largest financial hub after Dhaka and Chittagong. The city consists of 30 wards and 50 mahallas with a population of 533,000, according to the 2023 national census, and about 250,000 voters, according to the 2018 voter list of city election. University of Barishal (, ; also known as Barishal University or simply BU) is a public university located in Barisal, a divisional city in southern Bangladesh. It is the country's 33rd public university. The university was established in 2011 and began academic activities at undergraduate level in six departments under four faculties on 24 January 2012. The university offers degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The university houses 25 academic departments under six faculties, where 24 departments are currently providing postgraduate degrees. Every year almost 1,500 students are admitted to undergraduate programs in the university. This is a list of 300 parliamentary constituencies currently represented in the Jatiya Sangsad, the unicameral national legislature of Bangladesh. Each constituency is represented by a single Member of Parliament. Barishal Airport is a domestic airport in Bangladesh serving the southern city of Barisal as well as Barisal Division. The airport is located 12 km north of Barisal city centre just beside Dhaka - Barishal Highway. Location The airport is located close to Barisal city in Rahamatpur area of Babuganj Upazila. History Before it was re-constructed, there was a huge demand for an airport in the region, for quicker travel to the capital Dhaka.
