Banteay Meanchey Province
Banteay Meanchey (, , ) is a Provinces of Cambodia, province of Cambodia located in the far northwest. It borders the provinces of Oddar Meanchey province, Oddar Meanchey to the north, Siem Reap province, Siem Reap to the east, Battambang province, Battambang to the south, and shares an international border with Thailand to the west. Its capital and largest city is Serei Saophoan (city), Serei Saophoan. Banteay Meanchey is the 13th largest province in Cambodia. With a population of 861,883, it ranks as the ninth most populous in the nation. The city of Poipet in the western part of the province is an international border crossing into Thailand. Cambodia is divided into 25 provinces (, ). The capital Phnom Penh is not a province but an "autonomous municipality" (, ; lit. 'capital'), equivalent to a province governmentally and administered at the same level as the other 24 provinces. Phnom Penh has both the highest population and the highest population density of all provinces, but is the second smallest in land area. Buddhism is the state religion of Cambodia. Approximately 97% of Cambodia's population follows Theravada Buddhism, with Islam, Christianity, and tribal animism as well as Baha’i faith making up the bulk of the small remainder. Islam In Cambodia
Islam is the religion of a majority of the Cham (Asia), Cham and Malay people, Malay minorities in Cambodia. According to activist Po Dharma, there were 150,000 to 200,000 Muslims in Cambodia as late as 1975, although this may have been an exaggeration. Persecution under the Khmer Rouge eroded their numbers, however, and by the late 1980s they probably had not regained their former strength. In 2009, the Pew Research Center estimated that 1.6% of the population, or 236,000 people were Muslims. In 2021, the State Department estimated the Islamic population at less than 1%. Like other Muslim Cham people, those in Cambodia are Sunni Islam, Sunni Muslims of the Shafi'i denomination and following the Maturidi doctrine. Buddhism in Cambodia or Khmer Buddhism (, UNGEGN: ) has existed since at least the 5th century. In its earliest form it was a type of Mahāyāna Buddhism. Inner Cambodia
Inner Cambodia was a historical region in present-day Cambodia that was under the direct rule of Siam (Thailand) between 1794 and 1907. It covered much of north-western Cambodia, and included, most significantly, the cities of Phra Tabong, Siemmarat and Si Sophon (now known by the Khmer names Battambang, Siem Reap, and Serei Saophoan). The region was ruled by a Bangkok-appointed governor who held the title Aphaiphubet, and was incorporated under the ''monthon'' administrative system in 1891, becoming known as Monthon Burapha in 1900.
