Battles is an American experimental rock group, founded in 2002 in New York City by Ian Williams (musician), Ian Williams (formerly of Don Caballero and Storm & Stress). The current line-up is a duo, composed of guitarist/keyboardist Williams and drummer John Stanier (drummer), John Stanier (formerly of Helmet (band), Helmet, Tomahawk (band), Tomahawk and The Mark of Cain (band), The Mark of Cain). Former members include composer/vocalist Tyondai Braxton and guitarist/bassist Dave Konopka. The band has released four studio albums to date, with the most recent ''Juice B Crypts'' being released in 2019. Dim Mak Records is an independent, Los Angeles–based record label, events company, and lifestyle brand founded by Steve Aoki in 1996. The label has released music under the genres of punk, indie rock, hardcore, hip hop, and electronic dance music. History Early years Steve Aoki started Dim Mak Records in 1996 at the age of 19, out of his college apartment at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The label's first release was a 7-inch record by a hardcore punk band called Stickfigurecarousel. The name "Dim Mak" is a reference to Bruce Lee's Death Touch martial art technique. ''EP C/B EP'' is a two disc compilation by the American math rock band Battles. It brings together the two previous EPs, ''EP C'', '' B EP'' and the "Tras" single. It was released in 2006 on Warp Records. ''EP C'' was originally released on June 8, 2004 with Monitor Records, and ''B EP'' on September 14, 2004 with Dim Mak Records. Track listing The final track, "FANTASY", is divided into 10 tracks on the CD version. The first of these is 8:31, this is followed by 8 tracks of 4 second bass kicks. Tyondai Adaien Braxton (born October 26, 1978) is an American composer and musician. He has composed and performed music under his own name and collaboratively since the mid-1990s, including in the experimental rock group Battles from its formation in 2002 until his departure from the group in 2010. Early life The son of avant-garde jazz composer Anthony Braxton, as a child Tyondai Braxton was exposed to the music of Warne Marsh, Paul Desmond, and John Coltrane through his father. As a teen, he took musical inspiration from alternative rock bands Nirvana and Sonic Youth, as well as punk rock. Braxton studied composition at the Hartt School of the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut where his teachers included Robert Carl, Ingram Marshall, and Ken Steen. Dave Konopka
Dave Konopka is an American musician who is best known as the former bassist and guitarist in the experimental rock band Battles. A graphic design major at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, he also designed the band's record covers and tour posters. Konopka departed Battles in 2018.
