BAE Systems Australia, a subsidiary of BAE Systems, is one of the largest defence contractors in Australia. It was formed by the merger of British Aerospace Australia and GEC-Marconi Systems and expanded by the acquisitions of Armor Holdings in 2007 and Tenix Defence in June 2008. British Aircraft Corporation
The British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) was a British aircraft manufacturer formed from the government-pressured merger of English Electric, English Electric Aviation Ltd., Vickers-Armstrongs, Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft), the Bristol Aeroplane Company and Hunting Aircraft in 1960. Bristol, English Electric and Vickers became "parents" of BAC with shareholdings of 20%, 40% and 40% respectively. Forgacs Marine and Defence, previously Forgacs Group and also simply known as Forgacs, is a major Australian engineering and shipbuilding company. It has facilities in Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane and Gladstone. The company employs approximately 1000 people. Forgacs Group acquired Ullman Engineering in 1962. Following this, in 1987, it acquired the Newcastle Floating Dock. Shipbuilder Carrington Slipways was acquired in 1997, followed by the Cairncross Dockyard facilities in Brisbane in 1999. The company was founded in 1948 as an engineering supply company named North Queensland Engineers & Agents, then expanded in 1966 into shipbuilding and was renamed. Thorn EMI was a major British company involved in consumer electronics, music, defence and retail. Created when Thorn Electrical Industries merged with EMI in October 1979, it was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It demerged back to separate companies in 1996.
