''Art Collector'', formerly ''Australian Art Collector'', is a quarterly art magazine. It primarily covers Australian contemporary and Indigenous Australian art, and also features New Zealand and international artists. History ''Art Collector'' was launched in 1997 in Sydney, Australia. Shortly after its foundation the magazine was briefly in the news when text from one of its articles was used without acknowledgement by art critic Robert Hughes, when writing for ''Time'' magazine. Colin Laverty
Colin Robert Andrew Laverty (26 May 1937 – 9 February 2013) was an Australian medical practitioner and was the first to confirm (using electronmicroscopy) that the human papillomavirus was much more common in the cervix than previously thought and in 1978 he suggested that this virus be considered as possibly involved in the causation of cervical cancer. He was also a prolific art collector. Early life Laverty was born in Sydney, New South Wales, the son of medical practitioners Colin (Tas) Laverty and Beryl Laverty. He attended Newington College (1949-1953) and then the University of Sydney. He had the qualifications MB, BS; BSc (Med); DCP (Syd); FRCPA; Dip.Cytopath (FRCPA). Gene Sherman (art Specialist)
Gene Sherman (born 1947) is a philanthropist, academic and expert on art, fashion and architecture. In 2018, she founded the Sherman Centre for Culture and Ideas. Early life and education Sherman was born in 1947 and raised in South Africa to parents of European Jewish background. In the aftermath of the Sharpeville massacre in 1960, her parents decided to emigrate to Australia. They arrived in Melbourne in 1964, but returned to South Africa nine months later due to the large distances and political disagreement with the White Australia policy. Upon return to South Africa, Sherman attended the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (French) (Hons) and a Master of Arts (Hons). John Kaldor
John William Kaldor (b. 1936 in Budapest) is an Australian art collector, philanthropist, and the founder of Kaldor Public Art Projects. Biography Kaldor was born in Budapest to textile manufacturers Andrew and Vera Kaldor. After a short time in Paris as a refugee, Kaldor moved to Australia in 1949 with his parents and younger brother Andrew. Kaldor was educated at Saint Ignatius' College, Riverview, studied in the United Kingdom, and attended the Textile College of Zurich under the direction of Johannes Itten. After working for Universal Textiles, in 1970 he founded his own textile manufacturing company, John Kaldor Fabricmaker, in Australia, which expanded to the United States and the United Kingdom. Lyon Housemuseum
The Lyon Housemuseum is a hybrid residence and contemporary art museum located on Cotham Road, Kew, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. The Housemuseum displays the Lyon Collection of Australian contemporary art in a purpose designed building. The building is open to the public for pre-booked guided tours, school visits and other events on designated days each year. The Housemuseum also hosts a series of public talks and lectures on contemporary art, architecture, art history and museology which are open to the public. Corbett Lyon
Corbett Marshall Lyon (born 13 August 1955) is an Australian architect, art patron and academic who lives and works in Melbourne. He is a founding director of Melbourne architectural firm Lyons. With partners Carey Lyon, Cameron Lyon (died 2018), Neil Appleton, Adrian Stanic and James Wilson he has designed many award-winning institutional and public buildings in Australia. Lyon is one of Australia's leading collectors and patrons of Australian contemporary art and since 1990 has developed the Lyon Collection with his wife Yueji.
