At Long Last Love
''At Long Last Love'' is a 1975 American jukebox musical comedy film written, produced, and directed by Peter Bogdanovich. It stars Burt Reynolds, Cybill Shepherd, Madeline Kahn, and Duilio Del Prete as two couples who each switch partners during a party and attempt to make each other jealous. Featuring 18 songs with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, Bogdanovich was inspired to make a musical with the composer's songs after Shepherd gave him a book of his songs. All of the musical sequences were performed live by the cast, since ''At Long Last Love'' was meant by Bogdanovich to be a tribute to 1930s musical films like '' One Hour with You'', ''The Love Parade'', ''The Merry Widow'' and ''The Smiling Lieutenant'' that also filmed the songs in the same manner. 20th Century Fox rushed the film's release, only allowing for two test screenings before the final version premiered at Radio City Music Hall. Peter Bogdanovich
Peter Bogdanovich (July 30, 1939 – January 6, 2022) was an American director, writer, actor, producer, critic, and film historian. One of the "New Hollywood" directors, Bogdanovich started as a film journalist until he was hired to work on Roger Corman's ''The Wild Angels'' (1966). After that film's success, he directed his own film ''Targets'' (1968), which received critical acclaim. He gained widespread recognition and further acclaim for his coming-of-age drama ''The Last Picture Show'' (1971). ''The Merry Widow'' is a 1934 film adaptation of the 1905 operetta of the same name by Franz Lehár. The film was directed and produced by Ernst Lubitsch starring Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald with a supporting cast featuring Edward Everett Horton, Una Merkel, Sterling Holloway, Donald Meek, Jason Robards Sr. and Akim Tamiroff. "It's De-Lovely" is one of Cole Porter's hit songs, originally appearing in his 1936 musical, '' Red Hot and Blue''. It was introduced by Ethel Merman and Bob Hope. "Let's Misbehave" is a song written by Cole Porter in 1927, originally intended for the female lead of his first major production, ''Paris''. It was discarded before the Broadway opening in favor of "Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love". However, the star of the Broadway production, Irene Bordoni, performed it for a phonograph recording which was labelled as being from the production of ''Paris''. The song with partial lyrics was a notable 1928 hit for Irving Aaronson and his Commanders. The song was recorded earlier with partial lyrics for the Brunswick label by Scrappy Lambert and Billy Hillpot with Ben Bernie's orchestra in December 1927, and by Tom Stacks with Harry Reser's band "The Bluebirds" in January 1928. "Down in the Depths (on the Ninetieth Floor)" is a torch song written by Cole Porter, for his 1936 musical ''Red, Hot and Blue'', in which it was introduced by Ethel Merman. The lyric scheme juxtaposes images of high and low. It is a lament from the point of view of a rich woman in a penthouse apartment higher than any building but the Empire State Building, who looks down on the busy city life below her but nevertheless feels she is at the lowest and poorest point of her life because she is lonely.
