Ascq
Ascq (; pcd, Ask) is a former commune on the Marque river in the Nord department in northern France, at seven kilometers from Belgium. Agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, the former independent commune merged with others to become a district of the ''new town'' planned community of Villeneuve-d'Ascq since 1970. The operatic bass Louis-Henri Obin (1820–1895) was born in Ascq. Ascq is known for the Ascq massacre of 1 April 1944, where the Nazis assaulted the inhabitants and massacred 86 innocent men. The village was decorated with the Croix de guerre 1939–1945 and the Legion of Honour. The Gare d'Ascq (railway station) is served by trains from Lille to Liège (Belgium) and to Orchies. Villeneuve-d'Ascq
Villeneuve-d'Ascq (; pcd, Neuvile-Ask) is a commune in the Nord department in northern France. With more than 60,000 inhabitants and 50,000 students, it is one of the main cities of the Métropole Européenne de Lille and the largest in area (27.46 km²) after Lille. It is also one of the main cities of the Hauts-de-France region. Built up owing to the merger between the former communes of Ascq, Annappes and Flers-lez-Lille, Villeneuve-d'Ascq is a new town and the cradle of the first automatic metro system of the world (VAL). Ascq Massacre
The Ascq massacre was a massacre of 86 men on 1 April 1944 in Ascq, France, by the Waffen-SS during the Second World War. The 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend set out by rail for Normandy at the end of March, 1944. On 1 April, their train was approaching the gare d'Ascq, a junction where three railroads intersected, when an explosion blew the line apart, causing two cars to derail. The commander of the convoy, SS Obersturmführer Walter Hauck, ordered troops to search and arrest all male members of the houses on both sides of the track. Altogether 70 men were shot beside the railway line, with another 16 killed in the village itself. Six more men were arrested and charged with the bomb attack after an investigation by the Gestapo; they were eventually ordered to be executed by firing squad. Ascq Communal Cemetery
Ascq Communal Cemetery is a cemetery located in the former village of Ascq, today a district of Villeneuve d'Ascq, Nord, France. Organisation The cemetery shelters primarily graves of civilians, but has two particularities : it shelters British and Commonwealth war graves, as well as the bodies of the victims of Ascq massacre in 1944. Commonwealth war graves The cemetery hosts Commonwealth war graves of the First World War and the Second World War. History At the end of 1918 and in 1919, some British units were posted in Ascq for a few months : * the 229th Field Ambulance, * the 13th and 63rd Casualty Clearing Stations, * the 39th Stationary Hospita. The Marque (; nl, Marke) is a long river in France. It is a right tributary of the Deûle. Its source is near the village of Mons-en-Pévèle. Louis-Henri Obin
Louis-Henri Obin, born in Ascq, near Lille on 4 August 1820, died in Paris on 9 November 1895, was a French operatic bass. He created some of the most notable roles in French grand opera at the Paris Opera, including the part of King Philip II in Verdi's ''Don Carlos''. Education and career Born in Ascq, Louis-Henri Obin studied singing at the Conservatoire de Lille with Antoine Ponchard and then at the Conservatoire de Paris. He made his professional debut in 1844 at the Paris Opera in the role of Elmiro in Rossini's '' Otello'' and continued his career there, playing leading bass roles in many operas, until he retired from the stage in 1869.
