Arthropods In Film
Arthropods, mainly insects and arachnids, are used in film either to create fear and disgust in horror and thriller movies, or they are anthropomorphized and used as sympathetic characters in animated children's movies. There are over 1,000,000 species of arthropods, including such familiar animals as ants, spiders, shrimps, crabs and butterflies. Early 20th century films had difficulty featuring small insects due to technical difficulties in film-stock exposure and the quality of lenses available. Horror movies involving arthropods include the pioneering 1954 ''Them!'', featuring giant ants mutated by radiation, and the 1957 ''The Deadly Mantis''. Films based on oversized arthropods are sometimes described as big bug movies. Jiminy Cricket
Jiminy Cricket is the Disney version of the "Talking Cricket" (Italian: ''Il Grillo Parlante''), a fictional character created by Italian writer Carlo Collodi for his 1883 children's book ''The Adventures of Pinocchio'', which Walt Disney adapted into the animated film ''Pinocchio'' in 1940. Originally an unnamed, minor character in Collodi's novel who is killed by Pinocchio before returning as a ghost, he was transformed for the Disney adaptation into a comical and wisecracking partner who accompanies Pinocchio on his adventures, having been appointed by the Blue Fairy (known in the book as the "Fairy with Turquoise Hair") to serve as Pinocchio's official conscience. Barry Keith Grant
Barry Keith Grant is a Canadian-American critic, educator, author and editor who best known for his work on science fiction films, horror films and popular music. Grant is recognized as one of the leading experts on the work of American documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman. An Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Grant has authored or edited more than two dozen books on these subjects, several of which have become standard course texts on film studies. He has also been a featured critic on CBC radio. Career Grant earned his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in American literature and film studies in 1975. From 1975-2016 he taught at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, where he helped develop the undergraduate program in film studies, one of the first in Canada, as well as the country's only graduate program in popular culture. ''A Bug's Life'' is a 1998 American computer-animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. It was the second feature-length film produced by Pixar. Directed by John Lasseter and co-directed by Andrew Stanton, the film involves a misfit ant, Flik, who is looking for "tough warriors" to save his colony from a protection racket run by Hopper's gang of grasshoppers.
